Powerline LAN adapter question

yannickverc

So this is how I currently get internet connection from my modem to my PC:

Modem > Switch 1 > Powerline LAN adapter > through the powerline to powerline LAN adapter receiver > Switch 2 > PC and PS4

The problem is that I get 160MB down but only have 30-35 down (speedtest). The current adapters I have are "Sweex LC503 PL Kit 2x 500Mbit White" and I'm looking into getting "NETGEAR POWERLINE PL1200".

Will the upgrade from 500mb/s to 1.2gb/s adapters make any difference in the actual download speeds I get on my PC?

(The second switch doesn't not cause any loss of speed as I have tested it without and I have the same speeds.)

Thanks in advance

but the optical LAN cable is so cheap... why do people bother with these?

This is the best thing I can do to get internet to my PC, I'm not allowed to drag a LAN cable across the house, so that's a no-go

well... try a direct connection from the modem to PC first check the speed there.

Also if the current powerline solution is rated for 500 mbps then maybe it just can't do more because of all the intereference in your powerline...

But if that is the only way then it's worth trying.

Go to the shop where you are intending to buy the kit and explain them your situation, and ask if your could possibly test the thing and return it back if it doesn't provide any more speed.

but the optical cable is so cheap... and you can route it trough walls, the cable doesn't have to be on the floor

I can return the product any time for free in this shop so that's not a problem. I guess I'll try that

Powerline is like WiFi, the number on the box is theoretical. So that's your answer here, it's not giving your full 160Mbps because no powerline kit will give you the full 160Mbps in most scenarios. That said 35Mbps is a bit low so, it may be just a particularly dodgy AV500 kit.

Test what speed you're getting from your router. If it's 35Mbps there to then it's your connection and not the powerline adapter. If it is the powerline adapter? Then a better kit will give you more speed. For AV500 you should be getting around 70Mbps. If you go to AV1200 then you can expect closer to 130Mbps or so.

Yea I've tested directly from the router and I get the promised speeds there. They always told me a powerline loses a lot of speed, but I will test this new one and see what it does. Thanks :)

Is it plugged into an extension cable? If so that's your issue.

That's your issue. Either find a spare plug socket that's empty and plug it into there or take back your current powerline adapter kit and get one with passthroughs on it. I have better experiences with NETGEAR powerline adapters, just saying.

Currently it runs through 2 extension cables, The low speeds may ge up with a passthrough one directly into the net and then the extension cable in the pass through part?

I don't really either when I re-read my own shit there... lol.

But I'm getting a passthrough adapter now, sadly I cannot get hold of a netgear one in Belgium. You think this one is good? "DEVOLO DLAN 1200+"

Why dont you get 2 access points and and set it up. One AP can be between your router and pc and another at ur pc. You can plug the second one to ur network switch and u have internet.

To me hearing that is insane. My dad encouraged me to get on the roof with him to cable to my new room when I moved my setup.

Also, good to see that your problem's solved. You probably already know this but a piece of advice with powerline would to avoid any surge protectors.

Sig under construction.
