Building my first ever PC as a birthday present to myself! Budget of ~2000 USD

Howdy LTT! This is my first PC build and I was pretty clueless on how to go about picking out parts, but after a few weeks of research I've decided to give it a shot.

1. Budget & Location

~2000 USD. I'm willing to spend up to 2200, but the closer to budget the better, obviously.

2. Aim
I'll be using this rig mostly to play games. My internet connection is total crap, so my main concern is to make games look as beautiful and smooth as possible. I'd like to be able to run modern games at high settings. I play a lot of GTA V and I'd like to have Fallout 4 be as gorgeous as I can possibly make it, since Fallout is my favorite franchise of all time.

3. Monitors

For now I'm using a 1080p 60hz monitor, but I plan to upgrade in the near future to This Asus 4k 60hz monitor. So naturally I want to be sure that this rig will hold up when I make that switch. I'll be sticking to 1 monitor for the foreseeable future though, I don't like the visual break that multiple monitors have.

4. Peripherals
I've included the keyboard and mouse I'm planning on getting in the part list below. I like flight and driving simulators, so if you happen to have suggestions on joystick/steering wheel peripherals, I'm all ears.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current setup is a 2012 Asus laptop, and it's been good to me, but I think it's time for me to let go. GTA V on minimum settings is borderline unplayable :(

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($317.99 @ SuperBiiz)

I'm also thinking of adding another GPU later on (just doesn't fit into my budget right now), but I'm not 100% sure how to check if my case and mobo are capable of handling that kind of upgrade. I like the small profile of the case I've selected, but please let me know if I would need to change cases in order to accommodate future growth

So, What do you think of this setup? Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. And this is my 1st post, so please be gentle :)

Thanks in advance, I've been watching LTT for a while now, and I'm sure you guys will have some great advice!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I tend to run multiple applications quite a lot. That's why I went for 16 GB RAM

Edit 2: I'm not really interested in overclocking, admittedly because I'm still not 100% sure what it is, and because I've heard that it can decrease the lifespan of certain components, which makes me nervous bc I'll need this rig to last as long as possible

Why not go skylake if this is a new build? Also, welcome to the forums, and great post. Thank you for giving us lots of info to work with, unlike a lot of posts similar to your questions.

your build looks nice but you might wanta to save some money to upgrade internet :)

i would go with a maximus vii gene because i like asus but theres nothing wrong with your choice

and yes it does support SLI

also in the future you might want to go with a high refresh rate monitor with g-sync support

dont get me wrong i have the PB287Q and i love it but g-sync makes a big difference

Other than that I'd highly consider 2-way 980ti's if you really want to do well on 4K, but that is an upgrade you could do later in the line.

you might wanta to save some money to upgrade internet :)

That only works if the internet is capable of being good, most places other than America  give you the best internet available, such as my shoddy Australian 2.5Mb/s down and 0.15Mb/s up.

If I want anything better its going to cost me $3000 for Cable, or $15000-$100000 for fibre optics from where I live (I got quotes from ISP's when my phone line broke, obviously decided to just get a free phone line replacement).

Yeah I pay $50/mth for that. ADSL2+ about as fast as it gets (I could boost upload a bit by changing settings but it results in download cutouts/failures when uploading). Welcome to Australia

1. if you are mainly going to just play games an i5 is more than capable of that.
2. if you picked a "K" series and a "Z" MoBo, and not planning to OC it's pointless and if you are planning to OC be sure to get a cooler.
3. 16 GB is overkill for your needs imo.
4. if you are planning to do an SLI set-up in the future your PSU is great, if not, i would suggest to lower it.
5. Do you really need an ODD?
6. for the KB a tenkyless is much easier to use on pure gaming.
7. for the mouse, the Tycon have a lot of perks on it that you can use for flight sims.
8. an SSD boot drive is more than enough, imo

EDIT: unless you are going to SLI i would suggest to not go for a 4K, a 1440p is great, get a curved IPS and you are good to go.

skylake doesnt offer much performance wise but it supports ddr4 so it would have better future upgradabilities

I'd go with skylake simply because it's a newer platform, and if you're building a new rig, why not go for it? You'd need DDR4 and a Z170 board, but to me, it's worth spending the extra little bit of money for it. DDR4 is going down in price too. Skylake adds a lot of "futureproofing" I guess. I hate using that word, but Z170 has a lot of neat features.

Do you mind if I ask why? It gets good reviews and is cheap, is there something I'm overlooking?

Edit: In regards to the cooler, I mean. I'll take suggestions if you have any :D

Nah, it seems like a fine CPU cooler. I'd just prefer something a little beefier.. (I shouldn't be talking, I'm still using a 212+. >_<)

It'll do you fine. Sounds like you're ready to build!

Nah, it seems like a fine CPU cooler. I'd just prefer something a little beefier.. (I shouldn't be talking, I'm still using a 212+. >_<)

It'll do you fine. Sounds like you're ready to build!

Awesome, thanks for your help!

Made some changes to bigday's build. Since you won't overclock 212 Evo should do the job. I squized 16gb of ram too for multitasking. You wanted small case and I can tell you from my own experience that it's not that big. It is spaceous, so you can hide all the cabels. Overall the case is great, the only downside is that it doesn't support dvd/cd drives. But I highly recommend this case.
Here is my build: PCPartPicker part list / Pricebreakdown by merchant

Ok, so I fiddled around with it to add skylake and ddr4 while maintaining the aesthetic I wanted. How does this look to y'all?

Why are you so set on the i7? Are you going to do some rendering or other high intensive CPU works? For your needs (gaming) that's a total overkill. Same thing for the 16GB RAM. Also the 500GB SSD. A 150-250 SSD Boot drive is more than enough. And the ODD, just wondering why. Also the MSI 980Ti is a better overclocker than that, it can even beat the non-OC Amp Extreme. Not to mention you cant OC the Amp Extreme taht much. Are you going to use all the features of the MoBo? Or are you just throwing money for the bling on this build?

a 20 dollar cpu cooler will not be sufficient for an overclock on the 6700k. you need an h100i gtx or a nh-d14 for that cpu. overall, the build is unbalanced and needs work.
