Chromebook vs similerly priced laptop?

Vozella

I'm making a thread about this since I didn't find any similar threads?

My mom hasn't had a laptop for a long time because there's only one and she gave it to me. She says her phone (SGS6-Edge) is enough for most things she does. I want to get her a laptop (or notebook) now that I have a job and have money for that.

I was thinking about a chromebook, but she says she wouldn't get a chromebook even if it was $100. She wants to get something good instead.

So I might get her a chromebook instead if it's honestly a good choice for the money. But is it a good choice?

Should I get a chromebook or a similarly priced laptop?

(PLEASE NO HP.)  Edit: If you think there is a good HP product, let me know.

Why not HP?

Laptops within that price range usually are pretty crap

CPU: FX-6300 GPU: Sapphire R9 380X MOBO: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB PSU: XFX XTR 550W CASE: Zalman Z11 Plus SSD: Samsung 840 Evo

Chromebook, HP Stream,... doesnt matter.

If it's under $300-400 is pretty crappy, and not designed to last much more than a couple years.

So, either she goes with a chromebook, HP Stream, Lenovo Thinkpad 10, some other cheap cheap laptop, or she spends $400+ on something better.

Lol. That's why I thought I should buy a chromebook instead. Because she'll get used to it. She doesn't even need Windows to do anything special.

Also, what chromebooks cost $180?

While you did mention no HP products, if I'm perfectly honest the HP Stream is a pretty good deal in that price range. It has enough power for office work and web browsing, and very good battery life as well. Additionally, the HP bloatware on it is relatively simple to remove.

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

Garrus - HP Stream 11

Best buy to me is like Rent-a-Part. I needed a better GPU after mine died and integrated wasn't enough and bought/rented a 390. Then I took it back 10 days later after some gaming as well. Full money back.

I like Asus most, but I must ask: How do you know that?

Do you have a budget?

What will your mom be doing? (web browsing? media consumption? etc)

Chromebooks are good but you need to understand their limitations.
