"Coustom" speaker set up? (Buy subwoofer and then buy speakers)

Instead of buying a regular 2.1 sytem from Logitech, or Creative, or anything like that. Buy a Subwoofer from Klipsch or some other audiophile brands, and buy (i think its called) bookshelf speakers, and set them together like a 2.1 system. Will that be a good idea if you want to have better sound quality?

 

For example:

Boston Acoustics A 25 and Klipsch R-10SW.

 

(Not planning on buying it anytime soon, but just want to know)

way better than 2.1 computer speakers

 

and dont waste money buying them new, there are tons of people selling used high end audi equipment on craigslist for hundreds of dollars cheaper than retail price and in excellent condition
