Is it worth upgrading from GTX 780 Windforce 3x OC to GTX 970 G1 Gaming?

So the title is basically the question :) Need some thoughts on this one.. since both of the GPU's are very close. Something tells me my GTX 780 is better.. ?

That isn't even an upgrade. More like a side grade. Don't even bother. Wait for the next generation of gpu.

You could run two 780's off that psu but it's not exactly recommended. It's not a very good psu and two 780s can eat about that much wattage. I am sure they will be dropping new cards next summer.

PSU can handle 2 780s with easy - it can probably handle 2 290Xs so it's fine - but that doesn't make it good quality - it's decent but overpriced.

Corsair RM? Nope. It's pretty meh but it's got the corsair sticker on it so it's got a premium price tag and everyone buys it.

Whoa now, 2 290x? No way. That is just crazy talk. 2 780's is one thing but not 2 290x's. 

the 290x draws 40W more than a 970 :D - TDP and power draw are no the same thing - 2x 290X will be fine with a 750W unit - the system uses around 150W (generous) without them and about 700W with them. 2x 780s will use around 600W

RM are decent but not great - crappy 2ndary capacitors

ummmmm HAHAHAHAHA. Sorry couldn't hold that one it. 290x draws about 40w than a 780. Which is still more than double than a 970. gtx 970 is 135w tdp. 290x is 300w tdp. gtx 780 is 250w tdp.

Tdp is a good indication of the maximum power draw capable of the card, I never said those cards are constantly drawing that. The psu only has so much power to be drawn from. I have never seen anyone run 290x's on a 750w successfully.

Tdp is a good indication of the maximum power draw capable of the card, I never said those cards are constantly drawing that. The psu only has so much power to be drawn from. I have never seen anyone run 290x's on a 750w successfully. 

if the 970 drew 135W I would call that impressive but it draws quite a bit more. Don't be fooled, Maxwell has low TDP, meaning low heat output, not low power draw to the extreme. It's lower than Kepler but it's not as low as you believe.

Moreover, the 290X's TDP is 280W, not 300W and it's power draw is unable to exceed 300W per card since the connectors will NOT allow it - 2x8pin + PCI - headroom = 300W absolute max. That's simply how it goes.

I wonder how 390x is able to draw massive amounts more than that at times. Same connectors if im not mistaken.

390X and 390 have lowered consumption and heatout IIRC - not by much but it's definitely not higher - it would require more connectors since GPUs usually have a decent amount of headrom - my card can draw 300W but only draws around 220W under max load.

You have a similar build to me, if you're only gaming at 1920x1080 and the current setup isn't failing then why are you looking to upgrade?

 

Having said that im upgrading to a 980ti soon just because i can not because i need to lol so unless you're going to take that big of a step up than just stick with the 780 in my opinion.
