Camera for food and scenery?

So my friend is in the market for a new camera. Her budget is $500.

 

She works social media for a restaurant, so a lot of the pictures she will be taking will be of food. She also wants something good to take pictures of scenery while she goes on vacation.

 

I asked one of the managers at the Best Buy I work at about cameras, and he recommended one of the Sony RX100 series (specifically the first one as it's the least expensive and still available some places). He said that that camera has some good stuff she would need for food photos, namely good low light capture, indirect flash, and good macro. As for scenery he didn't have anything to add as she told me about that part after I talked to him.

 

Is this a good recommendation? His reasoning was that she can spend around 400 on this camera, or get a DSLR and need to buy addons that support all the features I mentioned, putting her way out of budget.

I'm aware. But it's just an EDC phone, and the quality of photo's it takes are phenomenal. More than enough for social media IMO.

Exactly! A better camera doesn't equal better photos.  It's all about skill.

Skill and of course knowing what you are doing.

 

You can see how they prepare the subject being photographed to make it look good.  So if you think they just take something they cooked in an actual restaurant kitchen and photograph it, think again.

I'm not saying a camera on a phone is better than a $1000 camera. I'm saying for a fucking cell phone it takes phenomenal quality photos. That's all.
