Boeing created Drone-killing weapon

jos

drone-laser-boeing.jpg

The portable device aims a silent, invisible laser at a target and tracks it as it moves, heating it until it burns a hole — a process that takes about 15 seconds. It's possible because all the energy in the laser beam is concentrated in a very tiny spot.

Boeing has several systems under development, all of which are designed to target drones or unmanned aerial vehicles. Drones have raised a variety of security concerns because of their ability to easily fly into unauthorized areas that are otherwise inaccessible.

Can i get one ... hope it is cheap,,and accessible to public

Now imagine pointing it at the rocket that the drone is carrying? :D
Also, while it is impressive and spot on, 100% lock and no chance of evasion, 15s might be a long time, long enough for the drone to lock on and fire a missile. Although I'm not sure if this is meant to take down armed drones in combat areas or what the purpose is. :D

You can take down commercial drones easily. Block the RF signal coming from the controller, that is when the auto pilot kicks in and drives the drone back to it's take off place due to loss of signal, but you block the GPS signal too and done. It's not that complicated. But military drones are an entire different story. :)

But if you shoot a drone on your own property you get in trouble

Yeah and will never be available to us lowly peasants because only the military will get to use it. Of course! what better way to quell uprisings?

let's all just get together our own stuff and build our own lasers to out-lase them.

Indeed.

Although I think you could make the argument in court if you took a picture or video of the drone hovering outside your bathroom window while someone is in the shower, and then shot it down.

The problem with shooting a drone is it will most likely violate one of the 4 rules, know your target and what is BEYOND it. Lobbing a bullet in the air is looking for trouble.

The laser seems like a good idea for protected areas like airports and hospitals near the choppers.

Anyway if its really military stuff, be sure it'll come with a jammer in case it got locked on by hostiles

Isn't this already a thing? I thought something similar was being put on US cruisers. A much cheaper, faster way to deal with drones that doesn't take up as much space as a large gun.

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."
