Recommende Wattage for this Build

TommyTwommy
Go to solution Solved by STRMfrmXMN,

So I am just wondering what PSU should I get for this build?

AMD FX 6300

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

GTX 950 or R7 370

WD BLUE 1TB

SAMSUNG 850 Basic 250GB SSD

2x4GB of Kingston HyperX RAM - 1866MHz

I was thinking about getting a Corsair CX500, but wasn't sure if it was enough. On the PSU calculator I get around 370W needed.

NOTE: I want a Corsair PSU, because they're the only brand I trust when getting a PSU.

Corsair power supplies in general should be avoided. They are literally all overpriced. Look for a Seasonic unit or Antec Neo Eco of 450W or more.

Don't get a CX model PSU.  go on PC partpicker select all of your components and it should say the estimated watts being used. Go from there.

Well 600w PSU is a good choice

List the parts in pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ and check the wattage there(top right side after selecting all parts)

500W is enough.

Avoid CX series PSU.

Go for EVGA G2/GS PSU instead.

i'm gonna recommend corsair's RM650 or the "i" version.

because you *may* upgrade to more power hungry parts in the future, and plenty of headroom means you dont need to worry about that.

(higher end GPU, maybe SLI, maybe AMD zen will use ALL da WATTZ)

i rather nor recommend Rm650-750 series. go for anything else except those 2 psu's.

if you haven't come by 100's of people on LTT who have faced problems with RM 650 and 750 over 2 years on LTT, i can't go in detail. google the issue if you need.

keep note RM850-1000 do not face the same issues as they have different caps.

I've had a CX430 for years now and I didn't have any problems with it. Don't know why you all hate it. BTW I'm not able to get an EVGA psu because in my country you can't buy those for some reason.

so, i read trough it, and i dont really seem to find any notable issues, aside from the RM 100W's ripple. (on 110% load)

EDIT: and i actually havent seen any, and i know PLENTY of people that are using their RMs without any issues.

doesn't mean it's not defective.

just because one thing is better, doesnt mean the other is bad.

that said, i'm gonna go back to cleaning out my hardware clouset, i have a few 10 year old chinese power supplies to go trough, and all of them still work.

Sure, i have stuff from 10 years ago made in china still works miraculously, doesn't mean anything if there's 6/10 reports claiming RM series (650-750) having issues, due note, i have a RM 850, it's not like i'm being biased,i'm just being cautious. just because you have stuff from 10 years ago that still does work doesn't balance all the problems ive seen on this very own forums who have faced issues with them.

what i'm saying is that the whole power supply stuff seems to be blowing up.

lets say theres 20 people on the forum that have had an issue with their RM PSUs, how many people do you think there are that didnt have issues with their RM PSU.

--

i'm in an area with seriously bad power lines, i have blown up several routers and a netfiltering UPS with my wall power. troughout the time of me messing with computers i've blown up ONE power supply, and that was one of the chinese ones, from the least reputable OEM i can get my hands on here.

and on topic of brands: i've had a D-link router last for about 10 years plugged in the wall, when i replaced it with an asus rt ac68u, that one had problems from the go. got a replacement, same thing. plug a crappy D-link in the same socket: no issues.

you keep recommending those PSU's i wont argue with your opinion, and i'll keep reminding people that it may be a bad idea. i rather let them know before hand what they are getting into.

i'm not gonna argue with you saying theres better power supplies out there, i just want to let the world know that "better" doesnt mean everything else is bad.
