Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1

NumLock21

1p80ux.jpg

Taking a look at the Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1, on the top area of the board, we can see it houses the latest socket from Intel, 1151, which supports the latest Intel Skylake processors. To the right of that, there are 4 DDR4 dimm slots, capable of up to 64GB of ram. A memOK! button is located next to the dimm slots, above the 24 pin ATX. It's hidden under the plastic cover, but you can still access, just by pressing on the cover itself. Moving towards the slots main part of the board, we can see there are 3 physical x16 and 3 physical x1 slots. The x16 slots are configured as, single x16, dual x8, and triple at x8/x8/x4. The board has 8x SATA 6Gb/s ports, with 4 of them part of SATA Express. A M.2, along with the CMOS battery is located below the last x1 slot, by removing the cover. On the back of the I/O, there are 5x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 3.1 Gen 2 with 1 type A and the other type C. HDMI, Display Port, and dual gigabit lan. Part of the Tuf Series, the board features a Thermal Armor, which channel cool air to the important parts of the board by installing the supplied motherboard fan at what's used to be the northbridge. Another fan can be installed near the I/O ports to help cool the heatsinks, There are 2 slider switch on that area, which opens up the vents, and that should also help with cooling. On the bottom of the board, it has a backplate, where Asus calls it the TuF Fortifier. Just like the rest of their TuF boards, this one also comes with a 5 year warranty. And according to Asus, the cover, for where you install the motherboard fan at the northbridge locatoin is actually metal badge. You can turn that badge into keychain or necklace!

I think this is the ugliest Sabertooth board Ive ever seen, Asus just lost a potential Z170 sale from me :/

I thought the X99 was kinda meh, but this one is too ugly IMO.

The Z97 Sabertooth lineup was the best out of them all if you ask me

4690K // 212 EVO // Z97-PRO // Vengeance 16GB // GTX 770 GTX 970 // MX100 128GB // Toshiba 1TB // Air 540 // HX650

Logitech G502 RGB // Corsair K65 RGB (MX Red)

Its still one of the few motherboards that come even close to matching noctua fans.

Would you rather something that looks like the LGA775 enthusiastboards? Because of all the ones I've seen they look worse-even my P5Q Deluxe with its fancy copper chipset+VRM cooling solution.

Any other high end board will make you realize that theres no difference anyway

How many of them come with a 5 year warrant and go through the same tests used for server grade motherboards? (Note, when it comes to buying expensive stuff I go for longevity-which is why I had a Pentium III 667 based desktop as my main PC until 2014).

Who needs a server grade motherboard, its a consumer board for a reason.

I could make my Z97 Pro last me through college if I wanted to

Both the MSI Z170 Gaming ACK and the ASUS Z170 Deluxe are as good as this.

It seems like Asus is trying to address the cooling problem at the M.2 slot (on the X99 board) which seems to be a good thing if you're keeping all the plastic covers on.

Exactly, I dont see why motherboards need to military grade or why people think that they need military grade build quality, when its already good and long lasting as is.

The only reason the motherboard will last that long is I don't have the money to stretch for a whole new system build right now. If the Fury X had been a proper 6 or 8GB card... Alas I'll have to wait for the HBM 2 cards to come around and see who has OpenCL 2.1 and Vulkan support at that time.

By that time a lot will have changed, tho it will only be about another generation, so like 8-10 months from now

I don't freaking mind the "military class" marketing. What I hate the absolutely cringey BROWN and GREEN military coloring on the slots and ports.

If there will ever be a Z170 Sabertooth Mark S, I hope they ditch the brown and green.
