Repurposing LED Strip - Desk Backlighting

Captain Matt

Hello all!

I have a spare NZXT lighting strip around and have REALLY been wanting to set it up as backlighting to my desk. There are absolutely no spots to run it out the back of my case.

What components would I need to setup the light strip on it's own little circuit?

Could I power it on batteries? Would the batteries drain REALLY fast? Could I add a potentiometer? The more details the better!

I would look up the spec, you can make a power supply for them and attach it to the power outlet in the wall. Also you could add a potentiometer once checking the watts and amps.

Maybe take out a pci slot and put the cord through there?

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

If your talking about the LED cable version It runs off a molex connection and if I recall correctly that should be 12V, so using a regulated 12 V DC power supply and adapting it to the molex connection to attach to the PCB would work great.

EDIT:

Correction it's a 5V  connection on the molex end since they use regular LED diodes:

So you think I could by a 5v adapter and just snip whatever connector off the end of it and each end onto the red and black cables of the led strip?

How can I measure amperage?

No not the end of the LED strip on the end of the PCB controller, which one of the NZXT LED's setups do you have the Hue or the LED rope version?

I don't want a giant hole in the back of my case : /

that make since, just figured it was the easiest option.
