possibilities of upgrading

Hi everybody, this is my first topic, I hope this is the right section.

I'm thinking to upgrade a PC i bought 2 years ago, this is a fast description

  • AMD A10-6800K Black Edition 4x 4.10GHz Turbo: 4.40GHz, boxed (AD680KWOHLBOX)
  • ASUS A88XM-A (Sound5.1-GBLAN-USB3.0)
  • onBoard ATI RADEON HD 8670D Graphics DVI - HDMI - VGA Adapter
  • 8 GB RAM ELIXIR/ G-Skill/ Crucial DDR-3 PC1600 (M2X8G64CB8HB5
  • 2TB Seagate HDD Barracuda 7200.14 2TB, SATA 6Gb/s (ST2000DM001)
  • 24x DVD-RW Writer Samsung SH-224BB Black, SATA, (SH-224BB/BESE) DVD Writer
  • be quiet! System Power 7 300W ATX 2.31 (BN140)
  • Case A-Dis (ELITE 705) 2x USB 3.0 Front (BxHxT: 175x375x405mm)
  • AMD CPU Cooler EKL Silence
  • Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit (DELL OEM) (upgraded to win 10)
  • Ultron UCR 75 75in1 Card Reader/Writer schwarz intern 3,5zoll

My question is, what should i improve, if I want a basic gaming PC? No price limit

thanks in advance, and I'm sorry if I made many grammar mistakes :)

Something like this would be perfect for 1080p gaming with the rest of your machine, i would clock CPU to 4.5ghz on all core and look for R9 280/285/280X/380 GPU to go with it and a nice 500W Gold PSU :

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280 3GB Double Dissipation Video Card  ($149.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($69.99 @ NCIX US)

Total: $219.98

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-08-28 14:16 EDT-0400

You could also look for HD7950/7970 which are the same as the R9 280/280X respectively.

Any of those GPU's will play just about any games really well with your setup, not max settings but sweet spot settings.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 2 VR

Thanks for the fast reply :)

I think you need to deinstall the current apu drivers and afterwards new radeon catalyst, must ask an amd user for that.

Given that the PC is an OEM prebuilt, I probably would not recommend a ENTIRE system over-haul (i.e. switch over the Intel). I don't know what you knowledge and skill level is regarding to building / tinkering with PC's.

That said, installing a graphics card, instead of using the "on-chip" graphics, you will see a significant performance increase. Even a graphics card in the $150~$200 price range will be a huge difference from the 8670D.

The 300W included with your system, may most likely lack the power requirement of the new graphics card, so you will have to upgrade the power supply (PSU) as well.

My question is, what should i improve, if I want a basic gaming PC? No price limit

thanks in advance, and I'm sorry if I made many grammar mistakes :)

simple effective performance improvements:

  1. a) backup your hard drive and reinstall if you haven't in a couple years it helps believe it or not. ($0 cost)

    OR

b ) replace your HDD with a SSD for your main operating system (which requires a reinstall) (about $60-$120 depending on what is available locally for you)

  2. Assuming you have the A88Xm-A listed here: https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/A88XMA/specifications/

Upgrade your ram as you have (1x8) RAM ELIXIR/ G-Skill/ Crucial DDR-3 PC1600 (M2X8G64CB8HB5) from what I can gather (best to open the case and check)

you board supports: "The Max. 64GB memory capacity can be supported with DIMMs of 16GB (or above)."

It is possible (and cheap) to go to 32GB of ram which is way to much overkill for most games by buying another 3 sticks of the ram you are already using I would recommend a single additional stick in slot 3 which will allow dual channel ram usage. and effectively double your ram throughput.

  3. A new graphics card and PSU to suit (as suggested by others already)

now to be clear

option 1 a is free but 1b will see more performance improvements as this will take some of the load of the HDD (good for big slow files where an SSD is good for smaller faster access)

option 2 will both increase available memory to 16GB and (not really but close enough) give you the ram throughput of 3200MHZ instead of 1600MHZ but only if  you have one stick in single channel config in your system. and cost around $80

for under $200 you can implement both the above which will improve load times and play-ability of games that you can already play. it will not assist in getting your system to play newer games in any significant way as that is limited by your GPU/Graphics card (in your case).

One last note: your onboard graphics is able to use your system ram as such you have not got 8GB of usable ram as the specs for your mainboard (below) point out up to 2GB is used by the onboard graphics card note also that if you get a compatible graphics card (assuming your APU is on the list they have online) you can use both the onboard and new card in a (lets say less than ideal) hybrid crossfire

Maximum shared memory of 2048 MB

AMD® Dual Graphics technology support *1

thank you everybody, I guess I'm going for the new GPU+PSU and do some research on how to put all in, worst case scenario I will come back here and ask for help again
