S6 edge+ or G4?

aduman

I haven't been active here for a long while so I decided to come back with a question! My iPhone 4S's wifi and battery died so I'm looking for a new phone which is going to be running Android this time. Currently set my sights upon the ones on the title but simply can't decide between them. The G4 is around the 2/3 of the price of the edge+ in where I live so please keep that in mind.

Thanks for the suggestions! :)

EDIT: Would adding a miniSD card to the G4 introduce any kind of laggy behaviour? I've always had this problem with phones that have expandable storage.

I heard more good reviews of the S6 than the G4. However I would rather get a Nexus device because I prefer vanilla android and not all that bloatware Samsung and LG put on their devices.

That's a good point. But I don't mind bloatware unless they make the phone lag considerably.

Have you had a chance to try the phones in person? The Edge+ for some (like me) is more difficult to hold than other phones due to the curve. This is most likely going to be the make or break in your decision.

The G4 also doesn't have a fingerprint reader and won't have support for Samsung/Android Pay.

I did try them yesterday and had no problems with the hold on either of them. G4 is more comfortable for sure but the edge looks simply amazing... I didn't know about the fingerprint sensor even after all the research I've done, thanks for the heads up!

I'd love to be able to wait a bit more but I'll be heading for college very soon so I don't have that option unfortunately. :( Will keep it in mind though.

Really a tough choice.

I'd go for a G4 for the removable battery, microSD expansion and more comfortable feel in the hand.

Keep this in mind if you pick up a G4 with leather back : http://www.phonearena.com/news/Heres-the-scary-wear-and-tear-on-a-leather-LG-G4-after-2-months-of-use_id72846

But the edge + is great too : better processor, finger sprint scanner and a stunning design.

In the end, it's up to you ^^

I personally hate Samsung but they beat LG in every way. If size of S6edge+ (and price tag) is not a problem just buy it... G4 is very good phone, but S6 is better...

Ive a g4, if you have any specific questions do ask. I was asking the same question before but s6 edge is meh

Does the plastic body bother you in any way? I hate plastic on high end products.

Very nice posts here, thank you for your input guys. Nice to see that LTT is still an awesome forum! It really is a very tough choice... I've seen that article and video about the leather back but it's expected as it's real leather. Both phones look great but the S6 edge doesn't have microSD slots or removable battery. It looks much much better than any other phone (subjective of course) and has a better processor/ram combo though which is what makes this decision crazy hard for me... Dammit!

I'm kinda in the same boat only I'm trying to decide on the 128GB S6 or the G4 and it's still a pretty hard decision.  This seems to be the information I've gathered so far in researching my impending purchase:

-Camera

They're both top-tier cameras but they're also both imperfect in different ways.  the G4 will take sharper and more detailed images but the post processing is pretty bad.  However, it does support .raw output so you can use professional software to perfect the image manually.  The S6 has far better post processing and will produce better colors out of the box but you will lose a little bit of fine detail from the post processing.  it also does not support .raw so you're essentially stuck with what Samsung gives you with post processing.  If you're a shutterbug who knows what you're doing, the G4 has the better camera hands down but if you're not and all you're using the camera for is social media, the S6 will produce better photos with less effort

-Build quality

The S6 hands down.  That glass-covered unibody is straight up sexy.  The G4 is still solid and is built better than similarly designed samsungs of the past.  The S6 also supports fingerprint reading, has a heart rate monitor, and natively supports wireless charging (you will need to buy the charging dock separately though).

-Expandability

This is where the Samsung devices really lose their ground.  The unibody design means you can't swap the battery so the G4 is better if this is something you've become accustomed to.  Also, if your battery somehow gets screwed up and will no longer hold a charge, you won't be shit out of luck with the G4.  I'm also confused about why Samsung went without microSD support because there are plenty of high-end unibody phones like the Xperia and HTC One that support it.  That being said, MicroSD card support is dying and ever since Android 4.4 Kit Kat, apps have been severely limited on how they can access expandable storage so using apps to automatically sync data can be a huge pain in the ass if the developer doesn't use clever, SD card-specific workarounds. SD Cards are still great for storing large movies and .raw photos generated by the phone but otherwise, they're becoming more trouble than you'd expect them to be so SD card support might not be that compelling of an option.  It's personally why I'm considering going with a phone with large internal capacity.

-Screen

They're both great.  End of story.

-Speakers

The G4's are garbage and the S6's are just average.  If phone speakers are important to you, you need to be looking at the HTC One

-GUI

This is probably the most controversial and subjective.  Touchwiz is still the most bloated android skin but the S6 has the possibly the best and most svelte revision of it.  The G4's skin (forget what it's called to be honest) is more lightweight and more similar to stock android.  The S6 also has more hardware-integrated features like a fingerprint reader, heart rate monitor, and samsung pay.  Your mileage may vary on how useful these features are.

-Price

Since you're comparing the S6 Edge+ to the G4, the G4 is way, way cheaper and it's really hard to rationalize the $300 price difference (depending on where you buy).  I personally don't see the usefulness of a phablet Edge since it doesn't come with the legitimately useful S-Pen like the Note 5 does.  The G4 is priced very aggressively and I do think it's a slightly more practical phone.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :) Really appreciate your effort, thank you.

I need the bigger screen on the edge+ for simply watching videos and gaming as it directly enhances the experience. I don't use the S-Pen although I can clearly see why some people can't live without it. It's just not my kind of thing (I tried it). And the edge screen design is just too beautiful to mark it as useless. I have to say that this thing can make people choose looks over productivity very easily and still keep them satisfied in the long run! Like paying the premium price for a Porsche over a BMW or something lol

I agree with your opinions on the expandable storage btw. I'm just afraid of the lag it might produce.

It doesnt really, but in any case i put a dbrand skin on it so i dont even feel it

I just can't stand the plastic unfortunately, if the outer skin of the phone was metal I'd probably be leaning towards it right now. :(

You're preaching to the choir. I'm no stranger to paying premium prices for aesthetic reasons so I know where you're coming from.  And yeah, one of the biggest turn-offs for me regarding the G4 is the plasticy quality of it. I've heard the leather backs are supposed to feel real nice (apparently it's genuine leather, not faux leather) but the idea of a removable back just makes it seem a little cheesy.  I'm more than likely going to get the S6 and not the G4 honestly.  I considered the edge but I've heard there is some visual distortion when viewing full screen video due to the roll of the edges so you might want to look into that a little more as well.

Also, you still might want to wait a few weeks for the Xperia Z5.  There's now a rumor saying that the high-end 5.5inch model will have a 4K display :o

Both of them are good phones, I'd lean more towards the G4 if you want a phone that has a stellar camera. Yes they do both have good cameras, but the one on the G4 is a tad bit better, in optics as well as manual camera settings for tweaking, to get the best of your scenario. If you're into rooting, custom roms, on your phone, I'd say your best bet would be the G4 because at the moment there are really no roms for the s6, as it uses an exynos processor.

I was thinking of rooting the phone but I'll probably just go with vanilla stuff. TouchWiz seems okay at the moment, it's nıt as horrible as it used to be. I'm not a dslr user or something and don't really know my around the photography thingies so the cameras are both acceptable. :) Thanks for letting me know though.

I really wish I could wait but I'll be back in college next week so I'm pretty much out of luck. :( How will they power all dem pixels though, 4K on a phone seems a bit crazy for me. Unless for VR stuff, then it'd make sense.

Paying for premium prices is the bane of my existence.
