Windows 10 reinstall question

Ihaveswag

Hey guys,

So recently I updated from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 without any problems. I am currently using an offline account on this PC, but I was already connected with a microsoft account tthat is mainly being used on my Windows 8.1 laptop. So assuming I wanna do a reinstall, because my drive failed or I have a new one or I simple changed motherboard and CPU and need to reinstall everything so the motherboard uses the right S-ATA drivers from beginning. Can I simple put the Win 8.1 dvd in my dvd-drive, enter the key again (optionally also log in with my microsoft account) and upgrade to Windows 10 again afterwards? I built the PC myself and also installed Windows ofc, its not prebuilt!

PS: on my install Windows package it says ''Windows 8.1 OEM'' if that information is necessary.

Yes you should be able to do that since your Windows key was converted to a windows 10 key.

If you switch out the motherboard I'm pretty sure you have to contact Microsoft to get a free product key but since you have a OEM key I'm not sure whether you can do that or not but you can do reinstall it's just that you may have a problem if you switch the motherboard

Not 100% sure

I just read something else about OEM versions and found out, that basically when my motherboard fails and I have to get a new one I am screwed, because the key is bound to the mobo and need to buy a new key for 100 bucks....

When I had Windows 7 pro OEM key I switched out my motherboard and when I called microsoft to activate it I told them it was only used on 1 PC so it was successfully activated on my new mobo and deactivated on my old mobo.

If you swap out a motherboard just contact Microsoft no need to reinstall or anything of sorts. They will activate it for you.

Here is a list, if that doesn't work find your country in that list, depending the country toll free numbers are listed.
