Do They Check Luggage?

I'm going to be flying back to Canada and I wanna bring some knives that are illegal in Canada, and I'm wondering if they check your luggage, and if they'd actually check if the knife is legal in the flight's destination.

If its anything like the airports in the US, then yes, they probably will.

I guess I should just bring some fixed blades. Canada, where you could technically own a machete and carry it around in public, but you can't own a 6 inch switch blade.

They usually don't check for specific items that are illegal -- what they check for are items that are illegal in general (i.e. they probably won't check to see if the specific knife is legal in Canada, so if you're allowed to have a knife in checked baggage, then more than likely they won't even check it).

They check bags. Don't bring a knife unless you want to get a free testicular exam and a long chat with the local police. That would be a minimum.

I have heard of people actually getting on the no fly list for accidentally bringing some weapon back and TSA thought they were terrorist smuggling weapons to others

If it's in your checked baggage it doesn't matter -- the average agent won't know or even care. (although there is still a slight chance it will be taken away -- but very slight).

Not from bringing back a couple knives.

It's not the problem of whether or not the knife is illegal but rather that they don't allow you to bring knifes onto airlines. They'll just take them if you have any in your bags/on you, even a little 1' pen knife.

Most airlines will allow you to bring a knife in checked baggage -- just not in carry on.

As a general rule, they're only strict with carry on's. With checked baggage you can get away with most things (excluding items which are generally illegal/promoted as illegal -- i.e. guns, explosives, etc... while something like (new) ivory (which is illegal to bring into most countries -- and specifically so in Canada) is highly unlikely to ever be taken away).

Assuming the specific airline you're flying on allows knives in checked luggage (just double check that it does) then you'll probably be fine, although the possibility does exist that it will get taken away (albeit it's a pretty small possibility).

It's possible to get on a plane with knives in checked luggage (chances are big), but more interesting is what will happen when you land in Canada... Believe me or not, they have luggage scanners on which your forbidden for import knives will be detected...

You should be fine then. The "scanners" are people look at x-rays of the suitcase and seeing if they see anything like explosives. While it's possible that they will carefully examine any knife/other item to determine if it's an illegal form of some item it's highly unlikely and 99% of the time you'll have no issues. So whether or not you will have an issue with a legal knife or an illegal knife basically comes down to the agent who happens to be screening that bag at that very moment.
