Folding on a laptop is good if you want to kill the laptop. If you still want to use the laptop and have it live to tell the tale, then DON'T FOLD. Laptops are not designed to do that sort of thing for long periods of time. Think of it this way - would you want to mine altcoins on your laptop? No, because it would kill it very quickly.

I would say do something useful with the laptop rather than just kill it with altruism. Make it into a router or a home server or something like that. Use it to learn about Linux. If you're not going to use it for school you may as well, seeing as you yourself will actually benefit rather than temporarily contributing to mass computing efforts.

I know it is very particular about pci/pci express nics so I thought that usb adapters were out of the question

Not as far as I know. But people have built PFSense routers out of laptops in the past, if memory serves. You could conceivably use one as a wireless access point at the very least.

Rekt M8

my school laptop only had stuff for school.

like a VPN, Gmod, minecraft, ... :P

that said, those were for lunchbreaks, and it also contained everything i needed for every class.

and if you insist on doing something other than class in class, do it subtile so you dont distract other students, and you're the only one to fail class because of it.

(or if you're a genius, in what case, spend those brain cycles on something useful.)

Even when at 50% load with the Light setting?

I've been folding 24/7 at Light with two laptops for several weeks now. The heat they produce is nowhere near the heat they produce at 100% load.
