Anyone else hate the term "Esports"?

KarateHottie93

I have nothing against competitive gaming. Hell, I'm one of the highest rated Death Knights in North America on WoW. Why call it Esports though? Why not just call it competitive gaming?

I can accept a lot of things as sports...even pro wrestling and fishing. Gaming is not a sport though. Gaming contributes to obesity from the simple fact you are not being physically active in most scenarios. How can something that makes you fat be a sport? That's worse than calling professional eating a sport.

And before anyone tries to define "sport" to me, no! Gaming is in no definition a sport!

I'm sorry for the rant. I just get so sick every single time I hear gaming referred to as "Esports".

Edit:

Sorry, not trying to offend people by calling gamers fat. Was simply pointing out that if you game 24/7, you will either be overweight on underweight because it is not physical. Sports are literally defined by the words physical and athletic.

If gaming is a sport than so is drawing and cooking...culinary sports, anyone?

I believe that it's fine to consider competitive gaming to be sports, but I don't particularly like the phrase - but then again I'm not sure of anything better to call it.

Sig under construction.

How can it be a sport when every definition of "sport" has the words "physical and athletic" in it?

Gaming doesn't contribute to obesity, it's a choice someone makes not to have balance in their life. People choose to game more than get exercise, just like how people who all they do is sit around and read aren't getting exercise. Just because it's not a "physical" activity doesn't mean it's contributing to obesity.

Depending on what kind of fishing you're doing, you can get overweight. What's your stance on calling racing a sport?

Also while gaming you're doing small split second actions, you brains going, your hearts pumping fast, your sweating (sometimes), and you're working with a team to complete an objective. No replace the word gaming with the title of any sport and it's the same thing!

Practically no one calls chess a sport... so why esports.

(I mean no offense to any chess players. I play competitively and my rating is around 1400.)

It was on espn.. Its a sport. :P Honestly  who cares..

Honestly it just annoys me on both ends. It sounds dumb, it's not literally correct in any society, it's an insult to real athletes, and just as big of an insult to gamers.

Not saying you have to be fat to be a professional gamer. Just trying to point out that sports are athletic and physical. Gaming is neither. Gaming all the time will make you fat or really skinny in most cases. Can't really say that about a real sport.

Also, racinf being called a sport is just as bad to me.

How is fishing a sport to you? Fishing is generally even less active than racing if that's your sole criteria.

Gaming is physical and will to continue to become more and more physical as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality enter the market.

Also looked at baseball players who have been in the league 5+ years. They're all fatter men with beer guts who can "barely" run. They're in terrible shape compared to most other professional sports players.

Because in competitive fishing you are still moving quite a bit. I said I could accept it as one but doesn't mean the idea thrills me.

Yes but they also have really great cardio or physical strength. Pro gamers generally lack both.

Love the dragon, one of my favorite fighters of all time. I miss the days of face kicking people and his too short title run.

I feel like you're generalizing gamers way too much, I'm not a fan of them but look at the Optic Gaming team, they all live in a house together, produce YouTube videos 24/7, go to the gym with each other all the time, and are generally great people. You're looking at the gamers who all they do is game and don't have balance in their life, balance is very important and you're saying all pro gamers don't have balance.

So it's a sport because it's stressful ? No.

No, I understand completely. I really do. Not saying gamers are fat. I'm stating that if you game 24/7 you will be out of shape...where as doing something like playing a true sport 24/7 will keep you insanely fit.

Look at powerlifters. They are generally really fat but extremely strong because their calorie intake is exerted in physical activity. It's the same with baseball players and linebackers. They are strong but their muscles are not generally aesthetic.

No but other than extreme amounts of physical activity it's the exact same.
