  • expose by the NY Times “makes it would, even by tech industry standards, like the equivalent of sweatshop torture from the early 1900s” to work for Amazon

  • memorable anecdotes - woman who lost her child during pregnancy was put on performance review because “she wasn’t giving her all to the company”

  • emails are sent out at all hours, miss an email at midnight and you get a text asking why you haven’t replied

  • daily reviews are standard, giving employees the opportunity to chime in and tear down others anonymously

  • described as “a place for overachievers to go feel bad about themselves,” Amazon admits it’s a tough place to work

  • Jeff Bezos (founder) said “he doesn’t recognize the company described,” refers to “shockingly callous management practices,” and urges employees to contact HR or him if any situation like that occurred

  • “Even if it’s rare or isolated, our tolerance for any such lack of empathy needs to be zero.”

Bitcoin could split in debate over currency's future

Source 3: medium.com/@octskyward/why-is-bitcoin-forking-d647312d22c1

  • Two sides to bitcoin:

    • Bitcoin Core (original)  - Increasing wallet side.

    • Bitcoin XT (slight variation) - Lightweight wallets.

  • Satoshi (bitcoin’s creator) said in 2010:

    • It would be nice to keep the [block chain] files small as long as we can.

    • The eventual solution will be to not care how big it gets.

    • When I eventually implement client-only mode, that won’t matter much anymore.

  • In recent months it’s become clear that a small group of people have a radically different plan for Bitcoin (Bitcoin XT).

    • What if people couldn’t run Bitcoin on their home computers any more?

    • Some of the changes they want:

      • Networks of payment routing hub

      • Sharp rises in fees

      • Ending support for mobile P2P wallets

      • Giving up on unconfirmed transactions

  • Unknown if people would want to migrate to these changes.

  • Limit of current system will be allegedly reached by 2017.

Research lab accidentally creates longer lasting Li-Ion battery

Source 2: hexus.net - 85625 research lab goof results 4x li ion battery workin

  • scientists form Tsinghua University in Beijing and Masachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston working on techniques to extend the working life of Li-Ion batteries

  • working on making the anodes of the batteries more durable

  • decay of anode material is a major cause of the drop off in Li-ion battery life after a few hundred charge cycles

  • batch of anodes were left under chemical treatment for several hours more than they should have been by accident

  • instead of throwing them away they test and the results were great (4x more durable than the current best available technology)

  • had been working on using aluminum in preference to graphite

  • aluminum expands and contracts more, so in effect these cells would self-destruct pretty quickly

  • soaked them in sulphuric acid and titanium oxysulphate which replaces the aluminum oxide (when aluminum is exposed to air) with more conductive titanium oxide

  • this provided their desired effect in a very meaningful way

  • Google says that data on just 0.000001% of disk space at the data center was permanently affected

First Quantum Interconnect

Source 1: linustechtips.com/main/topic/434027-first-quantum-interconnect/ OP: Jos

Source 2: technologyreview.com - physicists unveil first quantum interconnect

  • Major challenge in Quatum computing is that the devices currently work in isolation.

  • A solution has been developed and tested; a quantum interconnect that links separate silicon photonic chips and carries photons and, crucially, entanglement between them.

  • Developed by Mark Thompson at the University of Bristol in the U.K. and a few colleagues from around the world

  • The role of the quantum interconnect is to transmit the photons to another chip where they retain their path-encoded entanglement

  • Technical explaination:

    • It works by allowing the path-entangled photons to interfere with newly created photons in a way that causes them to become polarized. This also entangles the newly created photons, which pass into the optical fiber and travel to the second silicon photonic chip.
