Alienware alpha upgrade graphics theory

Hi everyone,

I plan on giving my brother my alienware alpha since his little gateway (yeah...its ancient...ran windows 2000 or 98...can't remember) that my parents gave him finally died 2 or 3 days ago. Now the alpha is decent for the games like League of Legends, CSGO, DOTA 2 and other similar things. But he also wants to play other games that this computer can't handle really well without downgrading the resolution.

So what I was thinking was using something like the EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock from bang good and upgrading that way since I can't find a solid answer on the compatibility between the alienware graphics amplifier and the Alpha.

So do you think this is a good idea...or should I look for something else?

ummmm...sure it's the alpha? Isn't that the steam machine?

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I actually looked heavily into this. The Alpha should be able to play nearly any game near high-ultra. its the same as a 750ti, so if you have a decent CPU and up the ram to 8 gigs it should be good.

that being said, it also has the PCI based wifi, so you could use the same thing for external gpus on laptops. that was my original plan when they hit 350$, instead I got a real desktop. actually regret it lol

The alpha is a steam machine esque pc

Do not upgrade using a Egpu, you will run in to problems

If you really want, you can run it off the wifi or mini pcie port, but that's cumbersome and risky for someone who doesn't know much about pc's like your bro

I think OP is referring to an old aliewnare machine that's not the alpha.

I have the generation that ran windows 8.1 (now 10). It has the i3 processor (which I plan on upgrading) and I already put 8gb's of ram and upgraded the slow laptop drive to a faster hybrid drive.

give it a SSD. could overclock it. Hard time believing it struggles in games. but havent used it myself so

So it's the i3 and 760 model ?

GPU model is kind of important when you're considering a GPU upgrade

Yeah...once I figured out if this worked or not I was gonna look into what card I should get him. Suggestions? I was thinking a 290 or a NVidia equivalent.

I haven't had issues with it per say but I want to give him something better than what I had initially. The original stock hdd sucked balls, having only 4gb of ram sucked also. So yeah after those upgrades it runs skyrim with quite a few mods with DSR enabled to 1440p at 60fps.

its a modded mobile cheap, equal to a 750ti

then try the external laptop gpu thing. should work just fine. make a build guide of sorts on it. or a review

Wait, then why do you want to upgrade it ?

If you want to, I would either get a R9 390 or whatever else your budget allows
