Chromecast external audio?

Hi Guys,

 

I want to buy a chromecast, because we have had multiple moments where we have needed to cast something from our phones to the tv, but had to download them, and stream them off my pc to my ps3...

For the audio system, i have an old set of Logitech X-540s. They are actually really good, and all we need at this time. Up to now we have been running a rca audio out of the ps3 to the system, which means only stereo audio, but the matrix option was enough...  I have tried using the rca out on our tv and going to the sound system, but that causes some funny noises and hisses... 

So i need a decent setup to get audio out of the chromecast...  

 

I could still use matrix and go just with a stereo audio extractor like this:

And if i wanted to get full surround i could get one of these, which could also mean i can go straight from the tv's optical out, to this, then to the 5.1:

I asked the sellers, and they all said it wont work with a chromecast, but i dont know why...

Also, for the decoder, he said it wont work going out from the tv, but i dont know why either! 

It seems like it should work! But they said no!

 

Im not sure which one to get...

you hook up to your TV via HDMI. if there is a sound output on the tv then you will not need any speakers.

But, i have speakers, and they are good... the tv speakers are crap, the rca out does not play well with my system for some reason...

I have a chromecast !

All I did was hook my speakers to the TV

then go to the TV and set it as my audio output device

then everything else is pretty standard issue

Basically what i want to do, is get 5.1 analog audio out from the chromecast...

yh, my speakers cant accept optical, only analog

And the rca out isnt 5.1, and makes some funny noises when connected to my speakers.

 

I think the optical out on my tv, does not transfer 5.1 anyway!

EDIT: it might transfer 5.1 over optical... TV is KDL32BX300 by Sony

It says Dolby Digital out... IDK if its 5.1 tho

Yh, sony make amazing tvs! we got this about 5 years ago? and it was a deal. 32inch full hd. I think only £189 or something! that was a deal at the time!

Ooo nice. I wanna make my tv smart, so thats why i want a chromecast. cos its cheaper and better than getting a smart tv.

A Chromecast, itself, won't 'make your TV smart'.  It simply mirrors a supported device, or plays media from supported applications.

If you want your TV to be 'smart' *without* the requirement of using a phone / tablet, you should instead obtain something like a Roku or Android TV device.

Here's the deal. 

 

Most TV's will not pass 5.1 input from HDMI back out the SPDIF/Optical. It ends up being PCM/Stereo. So while you will get Audio from chromecast, it will not be 5.1. I would look into your model of TV more, but, from what I have seen it's quite rare for it to work. 

 

You will need an HDMI Audio Extractor like the last one you posted. However, there is still a good chance that won't work, as that cheap box's decoder may not work properly. For example, some amazon reviews of that box people say Roku HBO works, but netflix doesn't work with 5.1. So, random problems like that. You may also get delay the more boxes/conversions you go through.

 

 

I personally would reccomend starting to put money into a used A/V receiver and speakers.

My Sony 40HX803 does pass 5.1/AC3 over the optical output if the source connected by HDMI provides it.

 

What you are trying to get around is one of the reasons for me using a HTPC instead - it's more flexible if a slightly larger box. If you want certain compatibility, get an HDMI audio extractor which only gives a stereo output and change all relevant options on the Chromecast's setup to "Stereo" - I don't know if will pass multichannel audio over it's HDMI connector, but if it does support it, setting it to Stereo only will ensure the "Stereo" audio extractor will work correctly. Yes, it means you won't be using all 5 channels on your speaker setup, but most content you watch will only be in stereo anyway - those extractors don't have any sort of pseudo decoding capabilities such as Pro Logic or Pro Logic II.

 

The main thing is, you will get the upgrade in reinforcement which comes from a using a subwoofer and better speakers than what are built in to your TV.

It doesn't mirror, it streams them directly, but uses the phone as a remote.
