New company “Alphabet” now owns Google

Source 3: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/428038-alphabet-belongs-to-bmw/

  • part of Google’s reorganization process

  • separating its core Internet business from several of its most ambitious projects

  • continuing to run all operations under a new umbrella company, Alphabet

  • brands continuing under Google are internet-centric - Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, Android

  • “moonshot” projects like X Lab and the Calico life extension project will operate as somewhat separate entities

  • Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin will serve as CEO and President, respectively

  • Sundar Pichai will take over as Google CEO

  • each business under Alphabet will operate as their own unit, with the Alphabet staff in service to them as needed

  • Alphabet will handle all capital allocation for these companies, and Alphabet will eventually replace Google stock, though it will still trade under the same GOOGL and GOOG tickers on Nasdaq

  • an issue that was not addressed was the fact that BMW owns the domain alphabet.com

  • this division of BMW supplies vehicles to corporate customers

  • alphabet.com normally gets an average of 3,000 desktop visits/day

  • spiked to over 160,000 after the Google announcement (though it could have been actually higher - servers were overloaded and site went down)

  • Google’s actual landing page, abc.xyz, received over 1.9 million views after the announcement

  • BMW is looking into the “legal trademark implications” of the name of Google’s new holding company, but stated that it did not intend to take legal action against Google

  • “However, BMW did change the text on its Alphabet website. A sign that previously said ‘Leasing. Fleet Management. Mobility Solutions.’, according to a screenshot via the New York Times, now reads: ‘Because Alphabet is more than a name to us’.”

Tesla burning cash

  • losing more than $4,000 on each Model S sold in Q2 of this year (total operating loss in Q2 of $47 million)

  • this is using different accounting practices than most automakers - under GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), Tesla is actually losing up to $14,758 on each Model S sold

  • estimated to have burned $359 million in cash last quarter, in a market where buying luxury vehicles has been encouraged and has seen a rise in popularity

  • this combined with production target cuts for 2016 does not bode well for their 500,000 production target by 2020

  • Tesla has just $1.15 billion on hand as of June 30, down from $2.67 billion one year ago

  • typically, a new car can cost $1 billion or more to engineer and bring to market, so this cash drop is very likely due to investment in the Model X and/or Model 3

  • Musk has said that there “maybe be some value” in raising capital “as a risk reduction measure” as they move into 2016, where spending is expected to increase due to the Model 3 and gigafactory

  • Intel says we can “expect improved supply soon” on Skylake chips

  • the Broadwell Core i7-5775C has also seen significant demand

Source 2: arstechnica.com/want-fiber-internet-thatll

  • not a new practise for ISPs - been known to charge up to tens of thousands of dollars to extend their networks to those outside of service areas

  • Windstream Communications provided a quote of $383,500 to extend their fiber network to his farm in Ceresco, Nebraska

  • the farm is only 4.5 miles away from Windstream’s nearest fiber facility

  • curiously, the farmer was also able to determine that there appeared to be a Windstream fiber line about a quarter-mile from his property, which is confirmed by a map of their fiber network

  • they refused to connect him to that line, stating that it’s “some sort of reserved, private Windstream-only line”

  • after receiving this ridiculous quote they contacted another network provider, Northeast Telephone Company

  • even though they are completely out of NNTC’s service area, they quoted the farmer a mere $41,915.88 (just over 10% of the previous estimate) to extend their fiber lines to his property

  • NNTC also agreed to a $6,000 credit for any other customer that signs up using the line that the farmer is paying to install

  • it’s unclear why Windstream’s fee was so much higher, but they confirmed it when contact by Ars, stating that “the total quoted was for 36 months of dedicated Internet service”

  • when pressed for further information on how they calculated their estimate they did not respond, and they did not respond about the private line a quarter mile from his property

FBI: Retweeting terrorist organizations could get you on a watch list

Source 1: linustechtips.com - %E2%80%8Bfbi retweeting terrorist organizati OP: Arty

Source 2: engadget.com - fbi retweeting terrorists organizations could get you

  • Twitter has “proved to be an invaluable source of evidence against supporters of terrorism” for the FBI

  • an account constantly retweeting content from ISIS and ISIL “could be a sign of criminal activity. That said, context still matters.”

  • “I can imagine an academic sharing something with someone as part of research would have a very different mental intent than someone who is sharing that in order to try and get others to join an organization or engage in an act of violence. The government is required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you acted with a criminal intent to violate the statute.” - James Comey, FBI Director

  • sharing the content itself will not get you arrested, but it will provide cause for your background to be checked

  • an example of a Tweet that got someone arrested was 17-year old Ali Shukri Amin, a 17-year old who used Twitter to promote Bitcoin donations to ISIS & ISIL

  • “Knowing it was wrong, you provided material support for a terrorist organization or some other offence... that is the bulwark against prosecuting someone for having an idea or interest. You have to manifest a criminal intent to further the aims prohibited by the statute.”

FCC: Cut the copper, switch to fiber

Source 1: linustechtips.com - fcc cut the copper switch to fiber OP: Jos

Source 2: arstechnica.com - fcc urges carriers to turn off copper networks upg

  • carriers should feel free to make the switch as long as they keep providing the same services to customers.

  • Carriers can retire copper networks in favour of fiber without prior approval. They just need to keep the customers informed.

  • Fiber based lines go down during power outages, unlike copper. Therefore phone providers are required to offer 8 hour (upgraded to 24 hours in 3 years) backup battery systems to buy.

  • inventory measured in turnover days jumped 60% in the last 12 months through June 30

  • sales have fallen by more than 75% since September 2011

  • HTC plans to cut costs and focus on high-end market (haven’t we heard this somewhere before?)

That Reuters news on Tesla burning cash, is manipulative at best, and an outright lie at worst. The "cash burning" is due to massive investments in new battery plants and other investments, that has nothing to do with car manufacturing.

Tesla's variable costs of their cars are lower than the price of the cars, so they are not losing money off of the car sales.

What do you mean PE is useless because you don't learn anything? Playing basketball/voleyball/football develop your motor skills, hand-eye coordination, muscular and cardiovascular systems.

For running you develop technique, for weight lifting you develop form. You learn about muscular system (sit and listen to teacher), how it works, how to develop it, you learn how to avoid various injuries. There is a difference between knowing that you need to warm up or how to kick a ball etc. and actually undestanding it; being able to do it.

Humans have evolved to be physically active, we need to be physically active, PE is there so you know better how to be physically active.

Healthy mind needs healthy body, Linus.

Good WAN show.

I think there was a good balance of off topic shenanigans and on topic discussion.

I wouldn't watch if you guys got too serious about staying on topic.

I can get tech news podcasts and shows anywhere, it is the goofy tangents that make the show what it is.

I'm with Linus on the Ritalin (in my case adderal) thing. When I was in the second grade, they tried to get me put on amphetamines because I would finish my schoolwork in the first couple hours of class and then goof off bouncing pencils and such. I had just transferred there from another school, which had already taught me most of that year's studies.

On the topic of adderal and ADD I was diagnosed with ADD when I was younger and medicated for several years. Eventually I was taken off medication and that didn't work so well (Grades went to shit and started getting into trouble.) High school I learned to self medicate with large amounts of caffeine. Isn't perfect because the caffeine only lasts so long, and you build a tolerance to caffeine.

Barring an issue with YouTube, @LinusTech could you please have someone do some sort of A/V sync before uploading this? The offset has been existent for several episodes and is really awful this time.

F#$k timezone programming. Use UTC! (See XKCD #1883)

PC Specs:

Ryzen 5900x, MSI 3070Ti, 2 x 1 TiB SSDs, 32 GB 3400 DDR4, Cooler Master NR200P

There were a lot of booming sounds probably due to the mic positioned ON the table and the guys occasionally hitting the table or typing something with the keyboard. Those sounds are really obstrusive probably becacuse of the amount of low frequencies to them. I don't know if they bother anyone else, but with me they really make me want to turn the video off. And I would like to watch it. So, if there's anything you can do about it, that would be greatly appreciated. :)

Serious dropped frames in this on both Vessel and Youtube , has to be worth skipping through it prior to uploading  as the last few where the same.
Great show though.

Family is Everything ....But a fast pc with an SSD is NIce

Oh WAN Show, you used to be so good!

Spotify shuttering free service
Collusion is essentially anti-trust.  I mean, isn't it essentially every other year that Microsoft or Google are slapped with sanctions for this sort of thing in the EU? Is this idea that the lawsuit would take so long even founded in any recent news or some historical fact? Or does it just require more syllables and therefore more time eaten from the show's schedule? C'mon. Saying these things that the a lawsuit on behalf of 'Spotify would take 10-20 years' is when I really started to lose respect for the hosts.

With reference to Doping and ADHD
This starts reasonably but spirals into Linus essentially going on an anti-diagnosis rant on the basis that people are different from one another... Oh, and he equates eSports pros' possible mental health obstacles to the many complexities he faced when he was diagnosed... at 8 years old. He also somehow believes ADHD isn't linked to family drama... Remind me again the age restrictions in ESL?  What is he even talking about anymore?

Siigh, maybe I'm just tired. And there were good moments, too. They covered Japan's nuclear power stuff and the Nebraska Fiber line well. But I check WAN to be better informed, not as a means to become irritated. It used to be useful - I could click to each topic I wanted and ignore the stuff I didn't. But as much as I appreciate Luke's humor, him being there seems to let Linus feel there's license to really go on tangents without necessarily a clear point in mind.  I don't know. Maybe with the successful crowd funding campaign you want a show to speak to your most devoted fans who come more to see Luke and Linus than necessarily the news. If that's the case, that's mostly not me.

I think your discussion about the gaming in school is kind off not really useful because the Swedish school system is quite a bit different from the American or Canadian one. Or from pretty much any one in the world.

I have to say you guys saying that hydro-electric power doesn't kill anyone apart from the people under the damn is not actually true. If it is hydro-electric damn then it floods land and actually causes methane to be produced from the dead plants. I mean if you have a look at this: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20928053-600-fossil-fuels-are-far-deadlier-than-nuclear-power/ You can see that even including bad nuclear disasters it pails in comparison to ever other power generation.
