Replacement for Loud Hitachi Hard Drive

So my 1TB Hitachi Hard Drive is pretty much the loudest component in my system.  It was originally an external hard drive so I never expected it to be the best hard drive around.

But I was wondering if there are any somewhat quiet mechanical hard drives that have decent performance?

I was thinking maybe a 5400 rpm laptop SSHD from Seagate could work, but I don't know how reliable it would be or if it would perform well in comparison to a traditional desktop hard drive.

Why not use a 3.5 inch 7200rpm WD red. I use that in my rig for mass storage and damn is it quiet and fast too.

Dont use 5400rpm

A 1TB WD Blue should do the job for you, 7200rpm is the way to go 5400rpm is painfully slow.

WD blues and blacks arent the questest around, but they're probably better than a crappy hitachi.

also backing the "dont get 5400rpm" argument here, i have a friend that uses a 5400rpm WD red, and his loading speeds are hilareous.

It's probably near end of it's dying stage. It doesn't hurt to get a new one to serve as a backup.

Hey there BallisticPeanut,

I would check the health of the drive with a diagnostic tool from the manufacturer.
For a good OS drive with lower noise levels I would recommend WD Blue, WD Blue SSHD or WD Green (if you don't need faster access times). If not used in a RAID array or a NAS/Server WD Red works pretty similar to WD Green so I wouldn't use it as a standalone OS drive.
