I fell in love with the look of the HOFs the moment I saw them.  This build has been in planning for a loooong time.  I was on the waiting list for the 980 HOFs TWICE!  It was a month before I got an email that there were any in inventory.  By the time I could place an order, there was only one left.  A few weeks later I was able to buy my second 980 HOF.

 

My work load went into overdrive late spring/early summer and kept me from doing anything.  Fortunately for me, it means I get to commission my build with 980 Ti HOFs.

 

Water cooling was never really an option or at least consideration.  A lot of the GPU companies put some real effort into the appearance of their cards.  Even the reference NVidia cards look great from the top - IMO.  It always seemed such a waste to hide the artistry and so the tilted installation was born (in my head at least).  Even the Diamond Cooling products for the HOFs just don't hold the same appeal to me.

 

I spent a lot of time looking at different configurations to show off as much of my HOFs as possible.  Once you decide for remote mounting the world really opens up on what you can do.  At one point I was considering mounting the HOFs so one showed the top face and one showed the standard side face, but it just didn't look right AND I had to worry about the exhaust air from one card feeding directly into the fan intakes of the other.  The rendering below gives you an idea of what I am talking about.

I'm considering custom fan grills based on the HOF card design.  Here is a first pass . . .

I spoke to GALAX and they gave me a green light to use the design elements (as long as I'm not doing it for retail or mass production)

 

The "swirl" design would go in the main compartment over the dual 120mm fans between the drive bay and the main compartment. (here)

The top of the case above my 3x 120mm fans (and the Airplex Radical) is a candidate for a full HOF face plate styled grill.  As much as I love the S Box, the allowances for mounting to the top of the case are just lacking in aesthetics.

Of course, I could just redesign the entire top so the HOF face plate is integrated . . .   If I did that then the hardware connections could all be blind holes from the bottom side so you wouldn't see any nuts/bolts/screws from the top side.  I'm not sure if I'm ready to bite off a project like that yet.  Its a lot of metal and it either has to be bent/folded or I start with a large slab of aluminum and throw most of it away. <_<

 

Thoughts/input appreciated on this point.  I need to mull it over for a while.

Memory upgrade - I will have 64GB of 3000 MHz CL15 showing up later this week.  Compared to 2800 MHz CL16, that's a 12.5% performance boost.

 

It's not the kind of upgrade most people would really need or notice, but ray tracing is hugely RAM intensive.  This was something I needed.  Fortunately prices have fallen since I started the build and performance has improved.

 

Now I have to sell the "old" DDR4 - :(

A pair of 980 HOFs and a pair of 980 Ti HOFs would be limiting even if I had the space . . .  I would lose a portion of the capability of the Ti HOFs since SLI would scale with the slowest/lowest memory card.

Sorry, didnt see that it was 2 types of cards.

Would have made an interesting Linus video, but not a good build :P

Back to the build itself.  Sometimes the smallest parts can cause big problems.  This is my version of a dream system build, so my boot drive is a Samsung XP941 (512 GB).  Granted it's a little bit of an overkill for a boot drive, but oh the speed B)

 

With the X99 Deluxe you have the option of using the M.2 socket on the mobo or the PCIe card adapter.  I guess in theory you could install 2.  The PCIe option went out the window for me a long time ago when I decided on the remote, angled mounting for my GPUs.

 

I was worried about the GPUs hiding my CPU cooling block.  Sorry, but a sterling silver cooling block has to be shown off!  I kept enough of it exposed to satisfy me, but then I found this damned little piece of black metal in my X99 Deluxe box.

This protects and hold the M.2 card.  I am not sure why ASUS went for a vertical M.2 socket on the X99 Deluxe.  I'm sure it sounded like a good idea at the time and only an idiot would try installing his GPUs in a way that would interfere with the drive bracket. :P   (it does offer nice passive cooling though - lot's of air flow).

 

Anyway, I had to rework the angles and positioning for my HOFs.  Now they are at different angles.  The lower is closer to horizontal (30 degrees off), while the upper one is closer to vertical (50 degrees off horizontal)

If you look near the right side of the upper HOF, you can just see the M.2 bracket in the rendering.

 

 

Next up is finishing the false bottom assembly and pump mounting.  Sometime in the next week or two I will get around to cable management details as well.  I have something different planned.
