Dedicated physx card on a mobo that doesn't support sli

werto165

Just wondering if you can use a dedicated physx card on a mobo that only support x fire. I've just bought a 970 and my 660ti is going to be sold eventually, just thought I might as well use it in the meantime between selling it.

Dedicated physX is useless. The PhysX on your single GPU will outperform a dedicated PhysX setup.

The only real reason I would want to is batman arkham knight, it worked somewhat okay when I was using my sisters pc which has a 660ti also. However the single 970 might be enough anyway.

Minor question. I thought CrossFire was just another name for SLI? If this is true, I don't understand how they both wouldn't work in place of each other...

Cross fire is AMD's solution, mobos tend to be cheaper if they only support xfire because with SLI you need to get extra certification, a corner which you can cut if you're making a cheaper mobo. I never really thought that I was going to SLI down the road so I didn't bother, SLI always tends to be a pain in the ass, especially when I tried it on my sisters PC.

Hi, you're both wrong

Might not help in every PhysX-enabled game, but calling it pointless/useless is incorrect.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

THE INFORMATION GUIDES: SLI INFORMATION || vRAM INFORMATION || MOBILE i7 CPU INFORMATION || Maybe more someday

Well, it is pointless. It's added heat and power usage so you can get a few extra FPS in Arkham Knight (of all games).

Some tests showed that it deteriorated the FPS.

Why even bother? Sell the other card if it's not the same as your main GPU.

I used to run a dedicated PhysX card years ago back when I went from SLI 8800 GTX's to a single 560ti SOC, I used one of the old 8800 GTX's as a PhysX card, and it boosted performance somewhat.

BUT...

Going from a 560ti SOC to a 780 classified, I tried to use the 560ti SOC as a PhysX card and it actually performed worse than the 780 Classified on its own.

Nowadays it isn't worth it. A single card can handle it better than a dedicated card in 90% of situations. And Always make sure ur Nvidia settings have PhysX set to GPU.
