HDD LED Light, how does it work?

NickB

How does the HDD light in my case know which hard drive to light up for? If I have an SSD as my primary drive, will it try to light up from the SSD?

Pretty sure it's OS drive..

Don't quote me

So what happens if it tries to light up for the SSD?

I'm quoting you

OT: HDD activity LED is tied to the boot drive (don't ask me how or why) as far as I know and it still works on SSDs. I assume it's tied to I/O signals from the drive(s)

The fact that you can hear any mechanical drive... I can't verify this, but since you will use OS drive always at the same time you access something on other drives, it will light up for any activity.

That LED is usually controlled by the SATA controller and will simply indicate the amount of busy time on the SATA ports it controls. Doesn't matter what devices are attached to them. You motherboard manual may hold more details.
