Should I get the GTX 970 OR the R9 290?

As of right now August 4 the GTX 970 cost $310 and the R9 290 is $240 and I would love if you guys would help me decide on the card. I will definitely overclock these cards to get the most of their performance. One last thing I know that the GTX 970 is faster but I'm not sure if it's worth the 70 dollars more it cost. (I would also like to mention that I play racing games just throwing that out there) Thank you for the help!  :)

PS:

They will both be with after market coolers with the R9 290 having a XFX and the GTX 970 will have the MSI cooler. I'm also up for any other card suggestion.

Get the 970, it is faster and there is more headroom for you to overclock.

Probably the GTX 970. Bit quicker. And if you want to SLI them later down the line, can give good performance increase despite the 3.5GB usable VRAM.

Are you going to only use them for gaming?

As Linus once said: "look at the games you are planning to play, take the average fps and calculate your dollar per fps" - this will give you the best value for your money on the game

Well than check the program which you are going to use and if it supports OpenCL or Nvidia Cuda Core technology
