New Moto G Impressions and Review

DevTechStudios

Holy Cow. I thought the OnePlus Two was a Flagship killer. This phone kills the flagship killer. How can that pack that much power, that many features, into that little of a price? Who knows.

Myself as a person who has had both Android and iOS phones, tablets, and has chosen the Apple route, this phone tempts me. For that much, how can I not get my hands on one? The worst that could happen is me return it..

First, the display.

It is rockin’ a 5-inch HD IPS display (1280x720).

Most people would think that is awful, but as an iPhone user, I’ve gotten used to 720p. But, for $179, 720p is fine, and people buying a phone for this much probably aren't too picky.

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, 64-bit quad core processor. Pretty good for the price range. No complaint from me.

Graphics: Adreno 305. I’m not a graphics guy, so I won’t say anything.

RAM: 1gb or 2gb, depending on the model. Well, doesn't the iPhone only have 1gb of RAM? I know iOS runs fine on that, but I don’t know if android can. I’m sure it can, but who knows. (The people that use it, duh)

Camera: 13MP rear and 5MP Selfie. Seems good enough for snapping a nice pic, but no professional photography.

Battery: 2,470 mAh. People say this can get you through a day. Only if my iPhone did…

Storage: 8GB / 16 GB and microSD up to 32GB. This is kinda disappointing. I mean for $179 phone, its fine, but 8 GB gets me Angry Birds and a Weather App. Woohoo. Wait, isn't it only like 6 GB because of the crap that android(and Apple) load onto it? Have fun with the 2 apps you could get. The 16GB is ok, my iPhone 5s has that, and I live with it. My next iPhone will for sure have 64 GB.

4G LTE. Good. If it didn't that would be a deal breaking.

One other thing that is cool is the colors. There are some really cool colors to chose from, and that, in my opinion, make the phone stand out. Hard to miss this phone.

Final Statement:

This seems like a cool phone. for $179, doesn't seem bad. How could you go wrong? My first impressions are good. The options you get are good, and it also runs Lollipop, which is good. I don’t believe it is stock, but near stock(correct me on that if needed).

Rating: 8/10 - I think a $20 price jump and 2GB of Ram, 16GB Storage, and 1080p display standard. Ok, maybe a $30 price jump, we all know these companies make these phones for $10 xD.

Interesting review!

A few things though...

8GB isn't a lot, and by no means should a phone like this have anything less than 16GB when the cost of the memory is so cheap, but that's way more than 2 apps worth of storage.

That 2GB of "bloatware"? Do you mean the OS itself? The OS isn't just there, you know, it does take up space ;)

These phones are definitely not made for $10.

What's a price dumb?

If you're going to include a rating system, break it down a little more than a single value at the end.

No pictures? Where are the pictures of your phone!

Definitely an interesting phone, with the front facing speakers, and now Moto Maker it does make it rather enticing.

It also has the camera from the Nexus 6.

However, I wouldn't go as far as calling it a flagship killer. It's not.

It's a very nice budget phone though.

I use Hyperboles xD and the price dumb is a typo xD

It's like the new Nexus 5.

Pretty decent phone, cheap for what you get, but not a flagship killer.

It does compete. Comes very close.

Unfortunately as a Moto G 2014 owner (I just wrote my review after 7 months (and 15 days) of owning my Moto G) Motorola only did minor things...

  1. LTE
  2. Upgraded Camera
  3. Moto Maker
  4. IPX7
  5. For $41 (or so) more 16GB of Storage, 2GB of RAM

I also think the Moto G 2014 looked better (even though there are some nice touches to the new Moto G as well)

I can get an Idol 3 with a Snapdragon 615, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, FHD IPS screen. (And it has a bigger screen too but I'd prefer a 5.2" or 5" screen) for $250...

It would be good to see how this phone compares to the soon to be released Alcatel Idol 4.7

As an owner of a previous MotoG (original) my issue with all subsequent MotoG's is lack of upgrades as the years go by. The 2nd gen had lower pixel density (bigger screen), and a better camera with front facing speakers but that's it. This 3rd gen doesn't skimp out and have 2 separate models for LTE and non-LTE which is good but otherwise (the lower model) is pretty similar.

IMHO, the lower end model shouldn't exist and the higher end (2gb model) should be the price of the current lower end. That and I think it should have a 1080p screen but that's a bonus... Maybe.. I'm undecided on that.
