GPU Mounted Parallel to Motherboard

_Mish

(This post has been moved from the graphics card section so I might be able to get more help :D )

Hey everyone!

Was thinking of doing some modding to my NZXT H440 and had some ideas...

I am going to get my side panel (acrylic) engraved, and thought to myself, why not go full out?

I have been reading around about having a pci e riser (?) so that you can turn the GPU on its side, so the full beauty of the card can be exposed.

Oviously, this would be difficult due to the brackets for the card not lining up (duh) with the gpu in its new position...

I was wondering if anyone has done something like this / there is something I can do to try and have the GPU supported in its sideway position... without it looking too sketchy...

THANKS GUYS!

PROGRESS SO FAR:

This should probably be under the modding section

I've seen it done before and it looks pretty good as long as it's mounted securely, in the H440 it should still be doable but a bit tight on space. What others have done is utilize the area between the PCI-E slots and the edge of the case modding a dual PCI-E slot and hooking it up with a PCI-E extension cable.

CHALLENGES:
  1. Mounting a bracket to the PSU shroud
  2. Making sure I dont short out everything
  3. Making sure the card has enough support

If anybody has solutions to these problems please reply!

I would fab' a simple metal rectangle onto which the GPU would be mounted to.  If it was me, I would use t-slot extrusions for the job.

You could mount that by drilling a couple of holes up through the PSU shroud, or possibly re-use/leverage the existing holes/threads that are already in the shroud?

PM me if you're not up to making this yourself.

There are 2 ssd slots on the shroud... maybe I could use one of those?

Also, I still have a problem with getting the bracket made... would 3D printing one be enough? I have access to one :)

A 3D printed part might not be strong enough to support the GPU but are you planning to mount it vertically into the shroud? I was assuming you wanted something like this:
