ASUS R9 390 at 92°C on Witcher 3

Arvizal

Title says it all. Most games hit the 65-ish mark, but the Witcher 3 hits 92°C... is this safe, or should I buy one more case fan?! (Noctis 450). Maybe I should check for dust? This PC is literally a week old, though..

Thanks!

case fans dont really help. 2 are enough. The easiest would be  a photo of your case.

Make sure you change your fan profile (I personally prefer MSI afterburner to the Asus tools): I am almost sure it's not ramping up fans to 100% when under load. If that doesn't brings it to high 80s at least then it might be your case and room temps being too high so you might need more fans.

But it is normal to get close to or up to 90 for really intensive games on this cards, though over it it's definitively not recommended since you're close to thermal throttling.

2 fans on the GPU, if that's what you mean

That's the max temp, apparently it hovers over the 80 range. My setup is the default Noctis 450 setup: 3x120mm front fan intakes, and a 140mm rear exhaust.

I will do that ASAP.

Check the fan curve on the card. with a custom cooler I would be worried if it got that warm...

Witcher 3 is a very demanding game, but it should not spike temps that far...

That's the DCU2 for you. If you can return it and get a MSI/sapphire/MSI/xfx card

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I'm not sure it's the cooler, My DCU2 280 hits 69 max on core and 72 max on VRM with Witcher 3.

You should take off the HDD cages that you don't use, maybe that will improve the airflow

I'll try doing that right now,

EDIT 1: Removed them, gonna check temperatures. Also moved it forwards, so the case has 2.5ft of room behind it instead of 1ft like before.

EDIT 2: So far, it looks good. I cooled the room down 5 degrees, and I did what I said above. Looks like it's at 85. Still not ideal, any more ideas?

2-3 degrees less will not help at all.

Well, 2-3 degrees less are nothing bad :(
And it was just to help a bit, ofc.

I had that same problem when I ran an FX-6100 with my 290.  As soon as I switched to an I5, the temps would not go past 71c.  It could be something to do with that.

Funny thing is, I DO have an i5 4690k. I just tested a few other games, and it's not an issue. Probably an issue since the Noctis 450 is a mid tower and this game is far too demanding even maxed out at 1080p. No idea, but the summer heat looks like an issue as well.

DCU2 ran great on the 270s and the 280s but it ran like an oven on 290 series cards as the heatpipes did not make direct contact with the chip, and they used the exact same cooler without any modification on the 390 and 390X. That's what you get when you're too lazy and just slap an Nvidia card cooler on an AMD PCB without any modifications.

Well my VRMs run slightly warmer than the core but not sure if that's an issue or not.

Actually, if you go check

video from linus, he at some point says that an r9 290 usually gets around 90° under load...

Now, if you think about it, since a 390 is a refreshed 290... With an higher power consumption, and higher clocks... Getting higher temps maybe, but with a better cooler...

390 has LOWER power consumption and TDP compared to the 290. It's a refresh focusing on power management and memory, not a direct rebrand.

That is with the stock blower though. Almost all 3rd party cards stay much cooler. The fact that OP has a 3rd party card but still gets the same temps as the reference cooler means something is fucky here.

Is your processor Overclocked at all?  What cooler do you have on it?
