Mid spec laptops section

Looking for a good all round mid spec laptop for uni, I was looking at the Asus UX501 (same as G501 linus reviewed) but unfortunately here in Australia its only available with a terrible FHD TN panel :( which is a deal breaker.

I want something relatively thin & light, a GTX 950m or 960m, good screen, build, 4+ hour battery life, SSD preferred. I dont know exactly how much that would translate to the US market but I would assume around $1.2k ($2k aus). Any recommendations?

Thank

also why no dedicated laptop section?

also why no dedicated laptop section?

A few recommendations

Clevo P650se

Alienware 13

HP Omen

Acer Nitro

Gigabye P34x

Aorus X3

MSI GE60/GS60 Ghost

Most of those should be in that price bracket with 960m + GPUs

I wouldn't really say you are looking for a mid spec laptop more like high end and you should have posted in the mobile devices. but as for laptop recommendations I don't rally know much about the current laptops.

960m/970m are high end components for laptops plus your are paying around 1.5k. personally I would say a mid spec laptop would have an APU, i5 or something like that without a dedicated GPU.

uh not really. 960 is more powerful then a 970m by a few %. 960=mid range. high range is 980m OR 970/980 SLI.

I know that but its super uncommon to get a standard GPU in a laptop.

What? Unless you are talking about a desktop 960, that statement is most probably wrong.

I say mid spec because I was looking at anything with a 840m to a 960m (I know thats a big gap but the GPU isnt my biggest priority). The lenovo y50 uses the same crap 1080 panel & the 4k versions are considerable more expense locally and only available in last years model. Pretty much all the laptops mentioned by Shadowcaptain are $2.5k+ locally except the acer v nitro which is too heavy at 2.4kg+ & the Gigabyte is really flimsy & unreliable.... I think I may need to extend my budget..

Another laptop which has court my eye is the Asus ux303LB, 13" FHD touch, 940m, i5 5200U and only 1.45kg, I know ts a far way of the 15" 960m but all I really need is a good portable laptop for uni which can play casual games

Sorry Its hard to look at AUS budgets from here I dont know what shops to look on or anything

the 940m is really only suitable for very low end games, the AW 13 is $1999 so thats quite good, sure its a tiny bit thicker and heavier than others, but its still very light and portable and very well build with good thermals and a nice display
