Hitchhiking Robot's US Tour Ended By Vandals

A hitchhiking robot which relied on the kindness of strangers has had its tour of the US cruelly cut short – after someone in Philadelphia damaged it beyond repair. HitchBOT, who had successfully managed to travel across Canada and parts of Europe, began its latest epic journey in Massachusetts on 17 July.With a sign taped to its head that read "San Francisco or bust", the immobile robot was designed to be a social experiment - with a smile on its face and its thumbs skyward.

While im the 1st to say America has some serious issues it has to work out it doesnt show anything all it shows is the robot ran across some random asshole one night

Which could of happened anywhere im amazed it didnt happen in canada in the 1st place

On reddit, there is a theory by /u/TheDuskDragon

 

Here's the sequence of events that most likely led to the destruction of hitchBOT:

  1. Famous YouTube prankster/vlogger Jesse Wellens finds the robot in Philly as seen here in this video.
  2. Jesse tweets to his fans to pick it up at Elfreth's Alley (the oldest residential street in the nation).
  3. Jesse posts the vlog (where he finds the hitchBOT) the next day where he admits that he's not able to take the robot to Washington D.C., so he needs a fan to do it for him.
  4. A troll fan sees the tweet and/or the vlog and decides to vandalize and destroy hitchBOT.
