Intel Core i7 5930k or 4790k

Go to solution Solved by x Relentless Xx,

The only reason I might be getting the 5930k is DDR4 for future proofing and X99?

Do you think it's worth it?

First of all, future proofing doesnt exist

Secondly, a 5930K for gaming and photoshop is a complete waste. If you arent working with high res photos in photoshop then save your wallet and get a 4690k, anything more will be a waste.

And Skylake will still be using DDR3 so no, DDR3 is here to stay. DDR4 is still way too new to already become mainstream

Well obviously the 5930K is better, but at pretty much double the price. A more relevant comparison would be the 5820K and 4790K, in which the 5820K still wins because it's a powerful 6 core (12 thread) compared to a quad core (8 thread). But DDR4 and X99 motherboards are more expensive.

Wellp I bought a 4790k and I can tell you it was overkill. I should have went with a 4690k most likely instead. EDITTTTTT: for gaming and photoshop 4790k is more than enough. just get a decent cooler.

CPU: I7 4790k  CPU Cooler: NH-D15 GPUMSI 970 4gb   Motherboard: z97 Gaming 5 PSU: Corsair hx850   Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8 gb  SSD: Samsung 850 Evo  Case: Air 540

Okay well I'm worried Z97 and DDR3 will go out of date do you think so..

Everything goes out of date after so long but it doesn't mean it will stop working. I have a z97 and I'm sure it will still be chugging along just fine in 5 years.

5820k owner here.

Do you live next to micro center? if so I would consider a 5820k.

Else just wait till Skylake which might come out next week.

Still wayyy too much of a waste for gaming a some photoshop

X99 is enthusiasts that do heavy video editing and rendering, they dont have any edge over Z97 in gaming. In most cases, Z97 actually performs better than X99 in gaming.

X99 CPU's are more directed towards multicore performance like video editing.

Z97 CPU's are more directed towards single core performance which is gaming. Although with DX12 allowing gaming for the first time ever to be considered multicore performance, but X99 still wont benefit more than Z97 with Dx12

Uh no....they wont. Skylake will be DDR3...period. No version of skylake will utilize DDR4. X99 will still be the only platform that uses DDR4. PERIOD

LOL skylake supports both DDR3 AND DDR4 now? LMAO worst idea ever. Thats gonna be so bad LOLOL

It's always been known that is how it would be.  In fact from what I read, the regular DDR3 won't even work.  Skylake will use either DDR4 or DDR3L, which is not the same as DDR3.

Skylake supports DDR4 desktop sized modules and DDR3 laptop sized modules.

So for anyone on this site running z170 or h170 mobos it'll be DDR4 only.

I wouldn't recommend Z97 at this point because Z170 is supposed to be here any day now.
