Can I transfer Windows 10 key from HDD to new SSD?

Hi guys.

Yet another Windows 10 thread, yes I'm also getting tired of it ;)

 

Here's the situation, I upgraded someone to Windows 10 on his old HDD, then installed a new SSD in his system.

I put the Windows 10 ISO on that SSD by using that tool.

 

However, that SSD obviously is asking for a key now, can I "deactivate" the windows 10 key on the otherwise inactive (merely for data now, Windows 10 is still on there) HDD and enter it on the SSD?

 

It's the same system, so the hardware is identical.

So many things I could write here... things like this.

Clone the drive, I'm sure you could find an easy guide on google.

Key is tied to MOBO. if you already upgraded you are fine to reinstall windows on the SSD if you want. That is what I did

Just keeping this here as a Well if you dont want to go through the install process you could try cloning the drives? Otherwise Microsofts site should have some info on that, I'll attempt to find you a link.

If you change motherboards while still keeping the same drive installed with windows in your system it will eventually realize "hey, this copy of windows is not genuine", then you will have to buy a new key to make it genuine again.

Here's the situation, I upgraded someone to Windows 10 on his old HDD, then installed a new SSD in his system.

I put the Windows 10 ISO on that SSD by using that tool.

 

However, that SSD obviously is asking for a key now, can I "deactivate" the windows 10 key on the otherwise inactive (merely for data now, Windows 10 is still on there) HDD and enter it on the SSD?

Follow this guide, it will tell what to do from where you are at, to have that Win10 genuine activated (assuming Microsoft server aren't being hammered with activations)

Ah, so in summary the old HDD never got a key to begin with, it just upgraded to Windows 10 and bound it to the hardware.

So if I understood the guide right, it should automatically activate itself? Or am I skipping a step, being that I practically installed windows 10 on another place than where the upgrade from Windows 7 occurred... Might try that actication tool once I go there.

So many things I could write here... things like this.
