Actually I was planning to use it purely out of familiarity. Any issues with that?

No issues if your using it due to familiarity.

 

However it is easy to make the assumption that I did, as there are much better products out there (admittedly not free).

I was leaning towards metro-e just due to that ping, 17ms.

 

My ISP runs Metro-E as well and the latency is little under 1ms to the closest POP 5km away.
