Microsoft Lay-offs - while CEO earns $84m in first year

Some info on his salary, reported by EDGE magazine published in the September issue. Just thought I'd share the figure. I'm a big MSFT fan, but corr check that out...

Fair enough to whatever he's done to the company, and I understand that the brand (Nokia) wasn't doing well, but he could keep half that staff for half his salary!

Again, very good point, but I don't think they could have possibly thought that Windows Phone, today and now, would fend off Android and iOS?

 

They'll probably re-hire a bunch of them in a few years IF Windows Phone starts to do well. But anyway.

Well, to do the right thing, and of course save 8000 employees from being jobless.  Even with Microsoft's severance pay they all still only have so long to find work and now the market has a -lot- more people looking for work due to those layoffs.

You don't need $84 million. Those employees could have been paid very well which would over time improve the economy if every CEO did this. Of course dollar values would have to change but in the end everyone would be better off.

84 million is money but for the scope of a company like ms that's nothing, they make that in less that an hour, as for the layoff, yeah it sucks but that decision wasn't easy at all, only keeping the needed personnel is business 101, any more is unwanted unnecessary overhead, also the layoffs is costing them more money that what they pay that staff, its not a simple "fuck off, we don't need you" thing, those people are getting pay for like 6 months with full benefits like if they had a job, that is so they don't have to sweat big time looking for a new place which shouldn't be hard at all given these people worked on nokia hardware, there's also the chance that ms could hire them back

 

i'm saying this not to defend ms because this shouldn't happen to anybody, period, but the situation those people are facing is nowhere near as bad as it sounds like, this is more like steeping a stone that anything else

Yes he works hard. A lot of people worked damn hard and still got fired. Working hard doesn't means you in any way deserve a ludicrous amount of money: that's just a way of thinking to make others think that by working hard they can eventually make it. Guess what? Millions work hard, every fucking day, and can barely feed themselves and their families. No CEO works harder than say a Foxconn factory employee.

 

You require a lot more talents and a lot of carelessness that cost hard working people their jobs to get to millionaire, 47k per hour levels of money. And Nadella might be a rare exception since most rich people i.e. his family for probably a couple of generations if not more, won't have to lift a fucking finger to not only be rich but stay rich.

 

Stop defending or justifying CEO salaries.

You're thinking of it like socialism, I see it as paying an employee a decent amount of money. Not just giving them hundreds of thousands of dollars, no, our economy would collapse overnight if that happened. But a healthy increase.

Yeah, to expand on this point:

 

Sure a CEO works really damn hard. Heck, maybe it's one of the hardest jobs on the planet. So let's say you're a senior engineer (tech field) in a very demanding, very stressful work environment, but you pull in, say, $150,000 a year.

 

Do you think being a CEO is 560 times harder than that?

 

Sure, comparing workloads and its myriad of short, medium, and long term stress levels is difficult, but I think I know the approximate answer: it's not.
