Intel i7 5820K vs i7 4790K

keep in mind, I'm gonna likely use this as a workstation. To be fair, I'd likely use the extra cores, but I don't know what for specifically.

 

I suppose, but with a H110i GT I could probably go further. And the max clock speed that I'd get on a 4790k either would stop really being effective in games, or the processor would either need very high voltages which could be hazardous that might prevent such speeds being available. 

In that case, an i7-5820K is a great idea. However, be honest with yourself about what you will be running. It could be a workstation but you might only use it for Microsoft word, at which point the i7 makes no sense. If you're running computation and simulations, then an i7 is an excellent idea.

As a side note, CPUs aren't that effective when running F@H. A GPU is a much faster and more efficient folder, so you could get away with two GPUs and a G3258 if all you're doing is folding.

I could use 3 way SLI on X99, which I could use, and only 16 PCIe lanes on the 4790k limits to 2 way SLI. However, the 4790k puts out less heat, so I could overclock it more, it has better stock clock speed anyway, and higher single core performance. What should I go for? And, I'm gonna use this mainly for gaming, with a side order of folding@home.

X99 makes no sense in gaming PC, 4790K will give you more performance. You can 4 way SLI on Z97 but it makes no sense as well, the scaling is bad, get 2 cards max.

Lower TDP so it could probably overclock even further, works on Z97 too.

if gaming is more important and you don't have the money, go with the 4790K. however. since you're selling that motorbike you could possibly be in a position where you have enough money to go X99 with the 5820K. if I had the money, I'd go X99 because I like F@H and I'd actually run 3 GPUs for crazy ppd and F@H likes cores on CPU so...yeah...but since folding is secondary, go with the 4790K.

X99 makes no sense in gaming PC, 4790K will give you more performance. You can 4 way SLI on Z97 but it makes no sense as well, the scaling is bad, get 2 cards max.

 

Can you give us your budget?

Well, 2 cards in SLI is the max for Z97 anyway. Quad SLI has to be done with two dual GPU cards. 

 

Bet yeah, @OP 4790K or 4690K for gaming

It has lower frequency, 95% of current games will perform better on 4690K than on 5890X, and by the time that changes X99 will be old anyway.

2 more cores that don't affect gaming performance in any significant way (and certainly not in a positive manner). Linus did a video of DDR3 vs DDR4 in gaming performance, and whilst the scenario wasn't perfect, there were practically no performance increases.

well all modern processors like the i5 4690k, i7 4790k and i7 5820k will have very little difference in gaming because most games use more gpu than cpu unless your playing arma or dayz but you will still get shit fps...

dx12 lets you utilize more cores in gaming although its only out im sure we will see some games use it and then the 5820k will reign supreme lol, but i agree it wont make that much of a difference

You can't use DX12 as a valid argument, there are no current games that support it. Until we see benchmarks with definitive results, that is not a well grounded statement.

The same doesn't apply to quad-core vs more. In modern video games, they don't really utilise any more than 4 threads (bar some isolated scenarios). The dual-core vs quad-core argument only really makes sense in AAA titles. If you're running LoL, older DX9 titles (which only used a couple of threads), any Source game, or Tomb Raider, then a dual-core is fine.

Please give some context, it goes a long way.

at least £1000, possibly more, depending how much the motorcycle sells for

keep in mind, I'm gonna likely use this as a workstation. To be fair, I'd likely use the extra cores, but I don't know what for specifically.

 

You can OC a 5820k to like 4.2-4.5ghz and at that point the performance is on-par with the 4690k/4790k. 

I suppose, but with a H110i GT I could probably go further. And the max clock speed that I'd get on a 4790k either would stop really being effective in games, or the processor would either need very high voltages which could be hazardous that might prevent such speeds being available.

Ok, so I'm already bored of my PC that I've had for like a week. It's AMD, it overheats, and now the graphics card is too for some reason, so, it's pissing me off now. I'm gonna sell a motorcycle and then build a high end computer. But, I'm still not sure whether to choose the 5820k or the 4790k for the CPU, and X99 or Z97. X99 has DDR4, and the obvious more cores. I could use 3 way SLI on X99, which I could use, and only 16 PCIe lanes on the 4790k limits to 2 way SLI. However, the 4790k puts out less heat, so I could overclock it more, it has better stock clock speed anyway, and higher single core performance. What should I go for? And, I'm gonna use this mainly for gaming, with a side order of folding@home.

An i7 makes no sense for a gaming PC get an i5 and then spend more on getting a good GPU :) And DDR4 isnt needed for gaming.

stick with an i5 4690k until you have a gtx 980 ti in your rig, then it's okay to splurge on a better cpu.
