Narrowing Down Laptop Options

SupernovaX360A

Hi guys,

I made a post here the other month but ended up upgrading my PC and holding off until my next payday to get a laptop.

After looking around for a while the main two which have caught my eye are the MSI GS60 series and the Asus G551 series.

There are tons of slightly different versions all over the place and I'll quickly post a few that I found.

I definitely prefer the look of the MSI laptops and they're also noticeably lighter, but after looking through reviews it seems they become extremely hot after short periods of gaming.

I'm looking for a light laptop with an SSD and a good graphics card which is also visually appealing (if possible). Whilst it is supposed to be purely a laptop for doing University work, I will ideally be gaming on it too - some MMORPGs but also newer AAA titles from time to time.

Any other suggestions are welcome too. Budget is ~£1000 but slightly less is obviously better!

Note: I havent used any of these.

From a quick look over the specs, they each have different selling features.

At first look http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/G551JW-CN080H-ASUS-G551JW-CN080H_1742563.html is a newer GFX card and more RAM but the second one http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16H212-287-MSI-GS60-2PC(Ghost-3K)-287UK_1809158.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjw58ytBRDMg-HVn4LuqasBEiQAhPkhukiNQxy5jb6YwquVkC-GKheLuvuAKwoMZoz9SNkB8CEaAllh8P8HAQ (Long link) has a higher resulution at the sacrifice of a lot of stuff like the CPU, RAM and the GPU. IMO the MSI one looks best though.

Could be utilized for other things. Dont know what but never know xD

1080p on a 15.6 inch screen is already overkill ._.

Why on earth would you put a 3K or even 4K (maybe 5K? idk, ALL THE Ks) on a laptop. Seriously, if it were 30 inches then yes, I'd see the appeal but on a 15.6 inch monitor? come ooooon :D

I remember the good old days of 480p 800x600 14 inch screens. Nobody complained back then ^_^

Very true, but you never know. It is likely just marketing but there could be someone with a use for it.

Just to clarify, I figured the 3k laptop was overkill for sure but decided to pop it in here anyway!

Definitely looks like the Asus is the better option then, the next struggle being which specs to choose! There are tons of slightly different ones dotted over the web with various combinations of IPS screens/SSDs/HDDs/Blu-Ray players and the like.

Still, if anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to chime in. I want a laptop that is relatively light with decent specifications but which also looks good, as I previously mentioned.

Thanks everyone. :)
