I would say go for the single most poweful card, you'll be saving about 200 dollars and MSI 980Ti you should also look at the Galax 980Ti Hall of Fame

heres the 980Ti HoF if your interested

Don't SLI

-higher temps

-higher power draw

my question, i'm getting the asus maximus vii formula, does the manufacturer of the card affect the performance? (ASUS MOBO + ASUS GPU > ASUS MOBO + MSI/EVGA/GALAX etc. GPU  ???)

Not at all. at least not from what I've heard/tested, might have to try that some day if a MSI GPU will run better on a MSI board, but from what we know, No it does not

I would go 980ti all the way, You still get pretty awesome performance, though 980 sli would probably have a bit more performance but 980Ti single would come with peace of mind and 2gb extra vram to boot :).

if this is a gaming build however, i would go for this and save some money http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mrNCQ7

(I hear the high end asus boards have better sound cards though? so i stuck with the maximus)

I'd get the MSI 980Ti. Single GPU is better supported than SLI configurations. 980Ti is better upgrade than a 980 and better priced crippled TitanX.

I don't think brand-pairing matters. I however read somewhere in the forums that high-end motherboards doesn't affect overclocking anymore, unless you go for liquid nitrogen overclocking.

980 SLI utterly destroys the 980 Ti.

The only thing is the pricing is fucking terrible on the 980 generally so unless you find a pretty good deal then 980 Ti would be better bang for your buck.

980Ti. Then down the road you can always add another

Two problems with this post.

I do agree that it can take 5 seconds, but some games out there are still not fully supported by SLI

Keyword there being some.

Generally those games are terribly optimized anyway so having a 980 Ti wouldn't help much better.

Most newer games do though, and plenty of older games do. And if they don't, they run better to begin with.

And when a newer game doesn't, they add it in an update.

People shit themselves over SLI too much imo

it's honestly true.

SLI is sexy, and if a game supports it (hopefully more will in the future with DX12) it's great, but if you aren't in the mood to handle the hassle, just get a 980Ti

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

i couldn't agree less. most people don't make that big of a deal about it. it's fun having two engines in a car, but i don't feel like people force it on others.
