It's a marketing thing. It doesn't actually mean anything, it just makes it sound cooler because omg keewwl look guyzez I got a Titan X with 10X more X than your shitty little graphics card, i mean, your little 980Ti or 7990 graphics card doesn't even have an X in it,  so it must be total crap, amirite, you filthy non-kewl, non-X casual.

 

I wish the letter X didn't exist.

The 390X is one tier higher than the 390. Same with 280x and 280, 270x and 270, 260x and 260. The x version is just a little better.

 

As for Titan X, it is the newest titan.  There was the original Titan, when the 700 series was out, then the Titan Black-an upgraded titan, the Titan Z-which was dual titan gpu's on a single card, and now with the 900 series of gtx cards there is the Titan X, because there are only so many letters that make a name "cooler."
