I switched to MS Edge

Ok I want to do this as Edge is new and I want to give chance to this new browser from Microsoft.

This will be mostly first impressions and not a review and I will be updating this from time to time if I find something interesting or annoying about it.

 

I started using it today as I upgraded to W10 today and I was using it fairly moderately...casual web browsing trough this forum or trough YT, etc...

 

Pros:

- Feels very snappy and responsive

- Make a Web Note function is awesome and very usefull

- Share function looks good but I am yet to use it

- Launch immediately when I click on icon

- Dark theme!

- Lower RAM usage than Chrome/Opera

 

Cons:

- You cant change download path in settings for who knows what reason. You have to go into regedit and change it manualy

- When I open new tab and start type right away sometimes it bugs out and it refuse to type anything untill I click into the task bar with mouse

- I encountered bug here on LTT which caused me not being able to quote people or type responses to post as the flashing "|" symbol didnt wanted to show up even when I was clicking with mouse into the window. I had to restart Edge several times and refresh page several times untill it finaly started working again

- When I go watch video on YT and I will make the video window larger (not full screen but center it and make it slightly greater in size) it will make black bars around it for better imersion which is good. But then when I go to another video it defaults it to small window as it is usualy but the black bars will remain as if it was resized and I have to resize it again. It also slightly changes the structure of page. This does not happen always.

- Lack of settings

- Another bug that prevented me to post images here on forum trough this tags [ IMG]link to image (without space). I was getting error "Invalid Argument".

 

Also feel free to include your findings if you wish.

 

 

UPDATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

So after several more days I must say that Edge is a broken piece of shit right now.

It is so frustrating to use it even for casual browsing and the reason is:

 

HTML5 is broken as shit and dont even start talking about BB Code.... Browsing this forum with Edge is a physical and mental fight with keyboard and my self.

I cant quote people.. only sometimes!

I cant use bold/italic/underline text ... only sometimes.

I cant post links otherwise I get 10 different errors.. sometimes it works!

CTRL+Shift+V doesent work.. and what else it does? It removes whatever you had in clipboard so you have to copy the thing with CTRL+C again.

I dont usualy scroll web pages with scroll wheel by spining it but instead I click with the scroll wheel and then move mouse up and down and the page scroll it self... it usualy doesent work in edge.

You cant start writing text just by clicking into the window you are going to write.. you HAVE TO click exactly at the begining of the window otherwise you cant write shit!

HTML5 video playback.. usualy it works and sometimes you want to skip ahead in video so you click the time aaaaand! ERROR: "This feature is not supported by your browser or is missing!" and then you refresh page because the video magicaly freezed and click the time again and suddenly your browser obviously does support that feature or some mage is just trolling you because it works!

and so on and so on... so many bugs that got annoying really fast. I am switching back to Opera most likely. I will try Edge once again after several updates as it is obviously still a lot of work to be done here.

 

It is sad I will have to let it be now because it is easy to accustom to the rapidly fast webpage loading. They load almost instantly.

its missing the escosytem that chrome has.

there really wasn't anything edge can do, that chrome can't

other than not hog ram.

Pretty much the same

Just add that consumes less ram :P (way less than google chrome)

I was using Opera previously and Chrome before Opera. I am not really tied to that ecosystem so it isnt bothering me that much but I do understand you.

 

Also... I couldnt quote you again. I had to use MultiQuote because when I used Quote the message window remained empty.

opera is based off chrome xD (chromium) 

the extensions are really nice in chrome, vast amount

I know. I just like it more than Chrome :D because of some minor details that were bothering me while using chrome.

EDIT:

I dont really use many extensions.

Only AdBlock really.

I really do want to use Edge, because it is pretty awesome...and fast...and fairly lightweight! But I need extensions/plugins. I know Edge is getting them soon, so whenever it does, that is when I will switch.

Edge is OK even for the previewers edge was still lacking up to launch day. MS has only been working on edge for about 5-6 months so they have a ways to go.

I remember there was discussion going on at one point on whether or not to hold off releasing Edge as it was still in need of work still but MS wanted to get out though the bugs still existed, both a good and bad move.

I like it. It is definitely faster than any other browser I have used in past. Aside from the minor problems I am encountering it seems to be a very good browser however the lack of plugins as some mentioned before may hold people back but that should be no issue soon as plugins are coming.

It definitely needs some patches still but I think MS will deliver this time unlike with the IE.

I used Spartan in the preview, and it seemed OK, but I just prefer third party browsers such as Firefox.

Absolute deal breaker for me. I have firefox ask me where to save every time; if it's an installer I let it go to downloads for later deletion but pictures or webpages and such go to their respective locations. No way I want to download and then copy later, that seems like a step back for me personally.

Yea. It surprised me a lot too. Such a trivial thing missing in options makes no sense in this day and age. I hope they will add it later.

Yeah should take someone a couple hours to add the feature I'd think, they could even hide it for all I care as long as there was a toggle somewhere.

There is not actualy many settings. They should definitely add more detailed settings. Even the advanced settings are prety lame IMO. I made screenshot of all settings:

EDIT: LOL another bug that didnt wanted me to allow post image here on forum .. this image bellow. I was getting error INVALID ARGUMENT when I posted this in "[img ]http://i58.tinypic.com/1o3aso.png[ /IMG]" (without the spaces).

I agree with everything you've said.

Just to add, MS were very clear that Edge is not finished and will be updated a lot after 10 releases. I'm confident they'll deliver everything we seek.

I like it so far.

Nothing weird for me yet.

The only problem I seem to be having with Windows 10 is that now my Arkham Knight game will not launch. Tried verifying game cache...also deleting and reinstalling to no avail.

I am going to dig a bit deeper when I get home.

 

Back to the edge though. I definitely hate that it doesn't allow you to set save directory...however that has to be coming in an update. You can't have a browser and not have that option. That to me is the only downside so far.

Aside from the endless wall of news that sucked me in for 20 minutes today, and the fairly decent websearch results that were surprisingly more accurate than google search (GJ, HF microsoft), I didn't find anything noteworthy to switch from chrome for now.

Yeah the only two reasons I don't use it yet is for the LTT forum bugs you mentioned as well as no extension support. Once they deliver, I am dumping Chrome.
