Old Server?

Go to solution Solved by linuxfan66,

You can run Sata drives using an interface converter which are quite cheap on ebay

Hello,

I was at a thrift store yesterday and i picked up a rack server from 2005

its a low power, low Resource Machine

The Original Specs were

CPU: VIA Samuel II 600 mhz

GPU on board VGA Controller (12MB allocated)

RAM: 128 MB Kingston DDR

PSU: 200Ws

HDD: 40GB WD Cavier (Had Debian on it)

MB: VIA EPIA-NL

I have added

1GB stick of PC3200 Ram (Maxes out at 1GB)

200GB Seagate Barracuda 72000 RPM

54MBit Speed Netgear pci wireless Card

and allocated 64MB of ram to the GPU

My Question is there any documentation on it? Bantam closed in April of 2010.

The Machine Was owned by waypoint in Las Vegas NV

Also What Would be the best OS for file server?

Thank you!

Ah i see your old school Stanley screwdriver there. Good man, stick with the american classic!

And, what do you plan to do with the server eh? The best os would probably be the lightest you can get your hands some. Some distros of linux might do, and perhaps something windows xp. But it will be hard to find hardware support, that's a really... really old cpu.

I'd go with DSL "Damn Small Linux" for something of THAT nature.

Find as much RAM as you can and a cheap raid card, throw in old drives, build a little FREENAS system for fun.

I think i'm going to install debian on it and use it as a file server.

I really don't think the processor could really even utilize it.

I cringe at the specs. But that is some pretty dank hardware.

TBH, its actually got far better performance per watt than any Intel or AMD CPU from the same period, mainly because VIA actually had very strict power targets that they always met, thus dominating when it came to performance per watt consistently.

What he said ^

Servers use extra RAM as cache for frequently accessed content, as well as temporary storage for files to be written to disk. You'll want the most you can install in that machine.

It maxes out at 1GB.

I had similar thoughts with SDRAM (512MB per stick limit), but as it happens I managed to find 4x legitimate 1GB ECC SDRAM sticks, so 4GB of SDRAM in my ULR. I'll see what I can find for DDR (hopefully non ECC).

I already added a 1GB stick and it only has one dimm slot

Those are 2GB DDR sticks.

If you can get 2gb stick dirt cheap I would be tempted to try it...
