Western Digital WD Green 4TB Write speeds ?

Hey Lastausraliangam,

4TB WD Green drives can reach speeds of up to 150MB/s. You can check the spec sheet for other info on the drive as well as speeds of the different capacities (the larger the capacity, the higher the speed due to data density): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=WJtcO0

Very few drives can reach such speeds so in order not to lose frames I can suggest to either continue using your SSD or to check out WD VelociRaptor which can reach speeds of 200MB/s. Here's the drive's spec sheet: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=9OScHp

You can also consider a RAID solution in order to reach such constant speeds. :)

Hi Guys,

Dose anyone know the max write speeds for a Western Digital WD 4TB Green HDDs? I had to change my recording codec for Adobe Premiere so cannot write to my current SSDs, the file side would be too large for a 1 hour recording, i have to use RGB24 to get the best result but for a 5 min test video the file size is 56Gb, so would exceed my SSD storage very quickly until i can afford to upgrade, I think however i might of exceeded the write speed though because the video skips fractions ahead when watching it which is noticeable, however the game is running smoothly at 60fps so its only becomes apparent in the videos. i also just wanted to check my maths is write with the speed required,

if a 5 min video is 56Gb -  56,000Mb

that would  =    11,200mb per min

                  =    186.66 mb per sec

so i would need a HDD able to write that speed or better per sec correct ? if so can a HDD do that or dose that exceed it ?

Thanks James

The drive would not be that fast, and no hdd would be that fast, unless you go to some crazy enterprise grade thing. Your best bet might be to set up ssd caching, or to off load footage you don't need onto a hdd and just copy it over to you ssds before you start editing.

My Barracuda cam make it close to 170MB/s if I recall correctly...

OP, my only suggestion is something like a WD Velociraptor, but I don't even know if one of those will be fast enough.

Every heard of "Teh googgles"? Anyway, i searched it up and i found this http://goughlui.com/2014/06/20/4tb-head-to-head-western-digital-green-wd40ezrx-vs-seagate-desktop-st4000dm000/. You should ignore the whole seagate side of things and just look at the WD Green drive.

Well im screwed then looks like i need to get a 1Tb SSD for recording then transphere to HDDs for storage, only have a 256SSD at the moment,  Thanks

Max write speeds of 153.7 mbs would explain why the footage skips slightly at certain times. At least its Thursday night and i wont be able to get a SSD delivered until Monday, so wont have to deal with all this mess until then.

Samsung 850 Pro's still have the best write speeds dont they ? or has someone beaten then now i know theres the intel 750 1.2TB PCI express ssd but thats twice the price which is abit much

i know i could google it all, but its 12pm and ive been stressing and trying things all day so its nice to be able to just ask the forum for help and different opinions.
