Hard drive problems?

I have a 1.5tb hard drive and a 500gb hard drive for some reason I ran into a couple of problems while install Windows 10. First one was when I tried to install Windows 10 it just wouldn't install on my 1.5tb hard drive. So I installed windows on my 500gb instead. Second problem I ran into was the hard drive just stopped showing up all together? Could this be a faulty hard drive maybe?

Does it show up in the bios?

 

If you can get it to show up in Windows try running am HDD benchmarking software and report finds

are you sure those are harddrives? 1.5TB and 500GB sounds more like a partition of a 2TB drive..

 

also: yes it could be faulty but I'd much rather say it's the wrong filesystem or not even initialized. check the storagemanager

Could be that Windows recognised a HDD with issues and refused to install itself on there. As above says, check the BIOS. If its not showing on there, its probably dead.

Yeah I'm positive it's two separate drives and not partitioned

Nah no trace of the drive even in the bios

Maybe. Try changing the SATA cable and the port. you might just have a busted port or cable.

 

Also, you could try reinstalling the motherboard chipset, although it might not help, since the drive isn't being detected in the bios

But if I change the sata port would I brake that port too?

If you can hear the drive "working" it means it's getting power and it isn't shorted out. Worst that can happen is you find out the electronics in it are dead. That or you have a fried port/bad cable

soooo putting a completely new twist on things the drive is showing up in diskpart but I'm not able to format the drive. is there an alternate program i can use to format the drive?

I always recommend using Hiren's Boot CD when possible and the tools on it. Partition Magic usually serves me well

You can try Linux Live CD and see if it helps in any way. Another option that you can try is to plug the drive in another computer (externally or internally) and see how it works there. Checking the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status is also a good idea. I recommend using the tool provided by the manufacturer.

Nah I FIXED IT!!!!!!! :D YAY! what revsilverspine said was right on about hirens boot CD... I just did a low level format and then i opened up disk management and formatted the drive and then partitioned it! and worked a charm!

Great to hear that :) It must have been something wrong with the partitions or the permissions. :) Enjoy your drive and make sure it's healthy before trusting your data to it.
