Is it worth waiting for skylake and z170

Go to solution Solved by CH-Nils,

I'm personally waiting for Skylake, also you might want to get a 600-650W PSU, a 760W PSU is too little for a dual-card build and too much for a single-card build, and an R9 390, it performs better than the GTX 970 for the same price and has more VRAM. Also, you should really consider adding in some RAM, makes a PC work.

Oups forgot to mention i'll add 32gb of hyperx savage in there. I need it for CAD simulations and rendering... might even go for an i7 4790k if the budget allows it

gtx 970 is better for me because i like my shit to run cool, plus the lower temps allows for more OC putting them both at the same level, and VRam isnt everything...

in conclusion: both cards are equally good: one has a little more performance while the other is a little bit cooler and allows for flexible OCs.

also gigabyte 970 g1 is only 10% slower than stock 980.

760W is because i'll need around 400W and most psu are the most efficient at around 50/60% of max Wattage. plus all the reviews on johnyguru etc give it massive praise!

Hi peeps

wanted to build a z97, i5 4690k gaming/CAD-rendering rig

Now i could finally buy the components as my exams are over and summer holidays are on.

should i wait 1 or 2 more months for skylake and equip my build with an i5 6600k?

here's what i planned to put together:

nzxt noctis 450

asus z97 pro gamer mobo

i5 4690k

cryorig r1 ultimate cpu cooler

gtx 970 g1

samsung evo 850 ssd

wd blue 1tb

asus pcie wifi ac68

corsair ax760

Id say wait but NOT to buy the skylake! Once skylake is released I'm guessing we will see an okay to awsome price drop in the older i5s and i7s. Yeah it might not be a half off price drop. But it could be the difference between getting an i5 and an i7.

we havent ever seen a good price drop the last i5/i7 generations, why should it be different this time? Only thing what will happen is that Intel CPU's get even more expansive until they fade from the market.

worth waiting. Its not much time left, you want to see what skylake really offers. And maybe go with a m.2 instead of an evo850.

its planned to be a worldwide release on the same day everywhere. Last informations from a friend which works for a reseller was, that they will arrive at end of the month (1week old info), which would mean they probably allready have it in stock but are not allowed to sell it. The more important question would be if they do get enough samples from the start.

Intel doesn't drop the price of their previous generation CPU's once a new lineup is released, especially with the high end haswell refresh CPU's. The new lineup will have a higher retail price to start with.

Intel will keep the same price for a while and then the new CPU's and the last gen CPU's will drop in price.

Looks like I have decided on which RAM I should go for after I saw the Trident Z, and I thought the HyperX Predator looked good.

Under load a GTX 970 can use north of 300W, that's 600W in case of SLI, add to that the mobo and the CPU, and a little CPU OC, and you'll easily pass the 760W mark.
