So I'm doing a little bit of planning here. I've put together a build using the G3258, and I wanna know because I'm eventually gonna have to upgrade from only 2 cores, which i3 I should upgrade to for the best performance. I say the i3 because I really can't afford and i5s but if you have any suggestions for lower end (cheaper) i5s then I'd accept those too. Also, has Intel ever said anything about making a K-series i3?

Lol keep dreaming about the i3K, if they ever decide to unlock all their CPUs again that means that they'd be in trouble

Any i3 would be better, usually the cheapest are 4150/4160/4170, any higher you'll be just spending for a better iGPU. But if you can get a i5 4460, that'd be a worthy upgrade

This is a signature.

i5 4460?

It's not worth it to upgrade from a pentium to the i3 save for an i5 4460 or the skylake equivilant if you can afford the new mobo

<p>Wish I could have this already!! : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qTLRjX

So what I'm hearing is; you can get an i3 for better performance but it'd be better for you to just save up and get an i5. Thanks for le recommendations guys.

Not worth the extra cost compared to a 4440/4460.

The 4370 isn't worth the price premium it carries over a 4130/4160.

Exactly. The best advice would be to hold out as long as you can (stick with the G3258 so long as it's acceptable for you), and upgrade to the best CPU you can afford -- ideally an i5 at that point.

Why would they be in trouble of they unlocked their CPUs? TBH it is a d*ck move by them to lock them in the first place.

Because there would be very little reason to buy a low end i5.

You have to realize that the only difference between the various i3s/i5s/i7s is the clock speed difference, so if they were all unlocked then there would only be a need for one i3, one i5, and one i7 -- and the price points would likely be $150, $230, $330.

They locked them guess why... = more money

If they were in a terrible situation they could consider to sell only a few CPUs all of them unlocked

Also, 2 cores and 4 threads @ 4+ghz > 4 cores @3.1ghz in many (most) situations.

For $1.49, sure, it's worthwhile. Unfortunately the price difference is usually more than that. If it's only $1.49 right now, then by all means, the 4590 is worth the money.

There really would be no room in the product stack for one. Not when the highest i3 sells for $150 while you can go get an i5 for $175.

Why is it a dick move? Because AMD in a feat of desperation sells all their chips unlocked now? Back when AMD chips were really good for gaming they used to be locked too. I had to use the silver paint trick to change the multiplier on my Athlon XP.
