Planning - New Photography Rig with side of Gaming

Hey Guys,

Only just joined the forum. Ive been building rigs for nearly 10 years now but last few years personally i have been using an Apple iMac for day to day use.

With my imac getting long in the tooth now and the graphics card becoming an issue with been so underpowered, i am looking to build myself a Windows 10/Hackintosh dual boot rig. (Be damned if i'm paying £2500+ for an iMac 5K) Why dual boot OSX and WIn 10?... For me its just personal preference, i prefer to work on my photography work under OSX with Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC, And i prefer to game on windows for obvious reasons. Ive selected my parts but i want to know what people think of the idea (no order has been placed as yet i should add). Looking for some help to see if i am missing anything or anything i should change. The Spec is as Follows:

  • Case - Corsair Obsidian 750D AE
  • PSU - Corsair HX1000i
  • Cooler - Corsair H110i GTX CPU Cooler
  • Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth X99 Motherboard
  • CPU - Intel i7 5820k LGA 2011-3
  • GPU - Sapphire Radeon R9 390X 8GB
  • Boot Drive - Samsung SM951 M.2 512GB SSD
  • Scratch Drive - 2x Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD - Raid 0
  • Storage - 2x WD Red 4TB - Raid 1
  • RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2666) DDR4
  • Display - Dell 27" U2715H 2560 x 1440

Couple of notes: I have a Drobo Setup at Current i use for Archive so above and all massive storage is catered for elsewhere and i have 2x 24" Dell ultrasharp monitors to go next too the new 27".

Im not massively rushed as far as going 4k but will do down the line. I figured with the added memory of the R9 390x 8GB going to crossfire down the line would give a good performance boost to give it that  full 4K experience but please correct me if im wrong. In addition i would contemplate water cooling the GPUs on a sole custom loop once a second card is installed in 6 months time.

Any pointers or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!  :D

your build looks good. the only thing i would change would be the psu. get a solid evga or seasonic psu instead of the corsair.

You don't NEEEED that big of a power supply, but it does not hurt. Everything else looks good even though I prefer Nvidia graphics over AMD.

i would also get a 980 so that you can do sli in the future. it won't be as power hungry as going two 390x

No point using OSX for Adobe CC, the programs are identical on Windows

I would not use Reds in your PC, you will want something faster for storage, like Blues  - reds are great for a NAS but not for program/file performance

You might want an SSD for games too....

I am on the fence with the 390x,, so I have noting to say here, personally would get a 980 and SLi that (or just a 980ti and be king)

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

Yeah I saw that as his boot drive, but he is going to be storing all programs and games on there? it might not be enough storage for everything , I would not want to run programs off the red drives

He has a 1000w PSU... Anyway, a good PSU and 2 390Xs are cheaper than a bad PSU an 2 980s. Also 8GB of VRAM might start to matter when xfired, at 4k/1440p.

For gaming your rig is perfect, for photography, its more powerful than needed. My relative is a professional photographer, has an i7 2600k and a 560 Ti, uses a 1080p monitor and CS6 to edit all his photo and video projects.

As far as the gaming goes its fairly limited to Guild Wars 2, Runescape, Eve Online, & BF4 with the potential to use some form of racing games in future for a bit of sim work however atm that is on the back burner until i go 4k.

With the way i have my shortcuts set out and how long i have been using it in the way i have i somewhat reluctant to defect over to Windows for CC work.

The Reds are something i am mulling over, potentially swap to Blacks or a SSHD.

I did think about going to the Green team A LOT but the lure of the potential to exploit 16gb of GFX memory down the line is just too tempting. If i was in the realm of Titans then they would be the choice but  i just cant justify that cost.

i know i know!  :P I just figured i would rather have a larger PSU that is not stressed should i upgrade and when underload doesn't spin the fans up much.

I was mulling over the EVGA one. Looking into the Platinum rated it really shortens the list down some what. If i could i would go for the AX1500i but i am not spending £300+ on a PSU! haha!  :P

1. £2500

2. Only for gaming

3. Have Razer Blackwidow + Razer Naga Chroma at current

4. Only moderately. 4ghz at most and only lightly on GPU but would be a case of trial and error.
