Never been a fan of pre-built watercooled PCs. They seem like a waste of knowledge and experience. You first need to research, find the parts, do the work- all the fun stuff. With this option you know jack about the guts of the PC and if it breaks you can't even do anything to save it since you don't know the procedures.

Ok, I have never built a pc ever. And recently I not only designed and ordered the parts I needed, I put it together myself. We have access to the internet now a days which make it SUPER easy to make a pc, if you don't know just google it. And for a first time builder my pc came out pretty freakin amazing. I think pre-builts even the high end ones are for people with deep pockets and nothing to do. Also I know the oil change thing is figurative (but unless you cut open the cooler lines and get fluid all over yourself from the pc then you arn't getting dirty...)

Generic memory is considered a 'pitfall' on level with cheapo power supplies now?

I'm glad this video was made. I've not yet actually used a prebuilt machine from those shops as of yet, but I do see their value to a large part of the "custom PC" population.

I like the case. I'd never buy a pre built unless it was something I can't build like a gigabyte brix (bought the a8 version). I like how linus likened it to going to eat at a restaurant. I can make food but other people can do it better and I don't have to deal with anything, I just get to eat. No ingredients to buy, no kitchen prep or cleanup, I don't have to sweat from the heat of the stove/range. Some people just want to use their pc and not deal with the little headaches. This would be a good option for them.

"sponsers"

so linus can paint his lambo

& that lambo too will be covered to the brim with sponsor stickers :/

Details separate people.

no words needed indeed.

Although I'm not a fan of rebuilds, when Linus mentioned the reasonably small price difference I have to say, for such a clean job, good-looking system and assured it works are more then worth it combined with the labour costs.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

The case is a slightly customized version of the Lian Li PC-05S. That case has the LED color-changing kit as an accessory.

Dunno, just not for me obviously.

What tower is that?

What CPU cooler are you using and did you need to do anything special to fit it in the case?

What are you using to light the inside?

Reason I'm asking - building a new PC soon, major upgrades being tower, CPU + motherboard + RAM, CPU cooler, and.... aesthetics + cable management (so horrible in my current build)

I posted this on the YouTube video but thought I would post it here as most would actually benefit from it plus I could post a picture of my rig and my specs.

I actually recommend Magic Micro on Ebay they build made to order custom PCs with parts you pick and choose including towers and have 100% positive feedback.  I had my PC done by them back in 2013 (still working) since I would normally build mine but can't due to my condition.   Free Shipping with a 3 year warranty and all components you pick out are compatible or they contact you and work out what will. They're not all flashy and don't do any tricks so there isn't the overhead and you're not paying for advertising. It is literally as if you paid for the parts and just had someone assemble it for you but that someone was really really good at it and the parts were top of the line.

Now if you can build the machine yourself I recommend doing it that way as you get the knowledge and save money but if you're someone like me who has lost the ability to do fine movements well I think this is the best option.

My rig I got in 2013:

Thermaltake 700w Power Supply
Core i7 3770k 3.5ghz
16gb Patriot Ram

The tower is a 760t it has the plexi window so you can see through it. It's a big case, and will fit anything you need in it.

The CPU cooler is an H100i from corsair, although the bigger H110i would fit and I will eventually upgrade to that.

Lighting inside it done by a NZXT hue rgb led controller that mounts in your 5.25" bay. Corsairs link node would have worked but I ran out of USB 2.0 headers so I couldn't use the RGB software in link.

I have the same case, it's a Corsair 760T Full Tower Windowed Panel Gaming Case.

First, for all those wondering about the case, The Bolt 3 uses a re-branded Lian-Li PC-O5S. Link >>> http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-o5s/

I'm preparing to build a Bolt 3 inspired PC using the mATX Lian-Li PC-O6SX (arriving this week) and Zotak 980 Ti Arctic Storm on custom watercooling loop using the Swiftech H220-X.

Here's a break down.

Bolt 3: $$4,075 Link >>> https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1249033

Self built: $2163 Link >>> http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HPYYZL

Total savings: $1912 and change for a better version of the 980 ti, RAM (better Hertz to CAS balance), and expandable mATX board if I decide to add another 980 Ti when 4k monitors get higher hertz.

THAT'S A 60%+ MARKUP!  Completely ludicrous. If this takes fifteen hours to build, it's $100 an hour labor. Ten hours, $150 an hour. That's $1542 for a light up Digital Storm logo and "clean hands".

Edit: for links

Really overpriced. Keep in mind that when you buy prebuilt, you no longer have access the the individual warranties of the components. That means you pay an insane price premium to have a system with a single all emcompassing warranty. This often means that if somethign fails, even if it is not completely needed for the system to function, or if you have a spare, you cannot swap in a lesser component while you send the one broken component in for repair. For many companies, you will be stuck sending the entire system in for repair (where depending on their RMA process, you can be without a computer for weeks (kinda like when a laptop fails). On top of that, not all companies cover shipping both ways, thus you can end up paying $50 to send in a system for repair.

While unlike some other prebuild PC makers, they offer a 3 year warranty (with occasional promotions for a 4 year warranty, but it doesn't change the fact that you are giving up a number oflonger individual warranties, including a lifetime warranty on the RAM.

Furthermore, if you build for equivalent perfomance, and equal or better quality, rather than trying to make the same exact system (full ATX) http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WDGzrH $1756.91

Compare to their system https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1229904 $2,996

Price difference: $1239.09

To match their price, you would have to go with a second 980ti and 2 1TB SSD's for some RAID 0 action

Remember, we are gamers who are likely not in ownership og our own personal oil company and drug cartel.

Thus performance and reliability comes first. Bling should only come when you have reached the top and you still feel like spending more but no one has anything faster available. E.g., you have so much money that your quad titan x build with phase change cooling on the GPU's and CPU, is at its max overclock, Intel has nothing faster tho offer you, and nvidia won't figure out a way to get you 5 way SLI, then you can go crazy with the bling in order to get rid of some of that cash that is making your wallet so heavy that it is giving you leg cramps.

I built my first PC just a few months ago, it's not the prettiest thing in the world but it's not that high end either. And everytime I hit a roadblock, I just search up google. It's actually that simple.

But, there will be people who will pay a crap ton more for other people to build their rig for them. Not everyone wants to learn how to build a rig by destroying a 4790K from static.

Edit:

Told you it wasn't pretty. And that's not a filter. My M7 camera had a defect. >.>

  • 5 months later...

Something like this is exactly what I'd need.

I am, "somewhat" computer savy, but not so enough to build a proper machine. And with me being gone out of the country so much, I'd like to just be able to come home, plug in, power up, and start gaming.
