O2 AMP for AKG K7XX

GrayHD
Go to solution Solved by iShad,

So I recently got the AKG K7XX's of off Massdrop and they're currently having a drop for the O2 AMP. Would the AMP alone be good enough for the headphones? Or do you need the ODAC combo? I don't really know that much about headphones and AMPs/DACs so I don't really know what the difference between the two is exactly.

Here's the link to the drop: https://www1.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-amplifier

Thanks for your help :)

Amp/dac aren't as necessary as people think, but if you want to buy one I'd grab the o2 from massdrop and the odac for $100 separately and save the 60 bucks instead of getting the combo. The schiit magni/modi stack is a good option as well for $200.

As for the difference between amp/dac:

Amp- amplify the analog signal that go into the headphone, upgrade if headphone volume is low.

dac- convert digital to analog signal, upgrade if the current one is noisy and you want a cleaner sound and less distortion.

Would you need one? Probably not

Is it good? Certainly yes

It's a good idea to get a dac too when purchasing an amp. Odac is a very good dac although personally i think modi 2 uber is better

Thanks for the help. I've been looking online and I see that there's multiple O2 AMPs/DACs... one from JDS Labs, Mayflower, etc. Are they all the same or is there one that's better?

They're practically identical, though the massdrop version made some alterations to the original design and how that will change anything remains to be seen. Though I think Mayflower or Jds Labs is having a discount on the o2 down to $100, I'd just get those if you dont want to wait until the end of September.

Ok cool thanks for your help, I'll probably just end up buying the combo since I don't really want to wait until the end of September.

IMO depending on your onboard audio, you don't need amp/DAC for k7xx
