[Mini-News] Twitch Leaving Adobe (And Flash Altogether)!

MDPS

Source: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Twitch-Yanks-Player-Controls-From-Flash-82306.html

Through many stages, Twitch is going to leave Adobe Flash Player for their streams for security reasons.

Game-streaming service Twitch on Thursday joined Apple and other tech companies in swearing off its dependence on Adobe's Flash.

The move away from Flash will happen in stages, but Twitch has promised its community that the gradual rollout will advance at a steady pace.

They have already begun the transition to the more secure HTML5, CSS 3, and Javascript. They plan to, with the aid of Apple, and other technological companies, use their new embedded code to prevent against stream hackers and other threats that could shut them down.

"To it's credit, the company proactively addresses security vulnerabilities in its products. But at a time when hacking attacks are increasingly top of mind for most businesses and many consumers, Flash's continuing problems are an embarrassment that fuels the calls for Adobe to kill it," - Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT

Adobe themselves seem to be moving on from flash, which was never secure in the first place. Especially in games, where simple programs such as Cheat Engine could easily access and permanently modify embedded code with a bit of user know-how. In fact, Google's Chrome and Modzilla's Firefox internet browsers have specifically removed support on their platforms for Adobe Flash because of this.

The debate over Flash's security vulnerabilities earlier this month reached a flash point when Google and Mozilla pulled support for the platform from their Chrome and Firefox browsers. Cybersecurity experts and consumer watchdogs alike have been calling for Adobe to announce an end-of-life pathway for the troubled tech.

So what do you think? Is Twitch making the right choice in making this migration that will surely make the system unusable at times while they work on it? Should Adobe permanently get rid of their flash player system? Or are they overreacting to this minor issue that could (possibly) be fixed by some more intensive security?

Leave your thoughts in the comments or vote at this poll*: http://strawpoll.me/5058962

*NOTE: This poll is simply for public input and will not have any effect on Twitch, Adobe, or any other company's decision about this matter.

shumway just sounds like a porn flash game XDDD

I see it's by Mozilla. Wonder if other browsers would adopt Shumway if it picks up traction.

While I am all for open-source, making something open-source, doesn't really guarantee better quality or security or anything. It has the potential to improve on all these, but it is not guaranteed.

Open source is just more headaches and problems. Something as widely used as Flash should never be open source.

Google either has their own or is developing their own version called Swiffy. https://developers.google.com/swiffy/

A fair bit different because instead of actively converting SWF files into HTML5, devs upload their SWF files to be converted into HTML5 before putting them up on the site.

Are you implying that widely used things should not be open source?

And no, it's not headaches and problems. It all depends on how the company in charge handles it.

You said that it was obvious that HTML5 is better, and that may be subjective to opinion not a fact. I do agree with you, but some people may not.

The whole thing to me seems like the war between computers and consoles. The facts are that computers are capable of better graphics, run games better, and you can build a computer for $300 that's still better than a PS4 or XBox One. But so many people still like consoles more than computers for simplicity, easier setup, and other reasons. Its just their opinion. The same applies here. HTML embedding will always be better than flash when looked at from a technical and factual perspective, but flash can still seem like the better option to many due to whatever reasons. Its not something to get worked up about or to take sides on, but opinions do matter, and actually help out the world a lot by giving different perspectives.
