If all you're doing is gaming then don't even bother with an i7. That 980 should make 1440p work well.

Extra 980 then 1440p then i7. The 980 first then the 1440p because you need all the FPS then an i7 to remove all possibly bottlenecks :)

jk. Definitely get a 1440p monitor. A 980 is overkill for a single 1080p monitor.
