GTX 970 or R9 390

Hey guys, so I thought it was time to upgrade my GPU and I'm set on the $350 price range right now. I was wondering what you all thought was a better get, a GTX 970 or the MSI R9 390 Gaming 8 gb?

R9 390 for sure. The performance of the card is just impressive! Sadly most games nowdays are optimised for nvidia cards but if you want a future-proof card go for the 390. You'll be all right

390 if you ever plan on going above 1080p. 970 otherwise.

Either way you should note the 300 series is currently having some issues from AMD (but those should disappear soon).

Just fyi. Most games are not optimized for Nvidia. In fact, from a developer's perspective most are optimized for AMD (given the nature of porting), BUT Nvidia spends significantly more time/money optimizing their gameday drivers (most of which are actually fixing broken code from developers, and other workarounds) than AMD does (even if they may or may not be better).

All Nvidia features have AMD counterparts which are identical, if not better.

Hahaha only now that 4 years later AMD made its version of Adaptive V-sync (different from G/free-sync).

But yes generally valid point.

Technically it isn't half the power. Theres some power spikes that can go up to 300w for the 970 due to gpu boost. But on average gaming session the 970 needs about 45% lesser. Tomshardware did a test on that.

Even the best non reference cards like Gigabyte's G1 have 250W power limit, so no, it's not going to pass that limit, unless you OC.

Yeah, but thats not the power you pull out of the wall i guess. And we know there is no 100% efficient PSU.

Hey guys, so I thought it was time to upgrade my GPU and I'm set on the $350 price range right now. I was wondering what you all thought was a better get, a GTX 970 or the MSI R9 390 Gaming 8 gb?

I would say go with the gtx 970 purely for its maxwell technology and Nvidia releases driver updates frequently.

Have any questions? just PM me

Eh, Free-sync is generally more accessible and affordable and based on Linus' recent video I'd say is pretty much on par with G-sync.

Drivers are a mute point as both sides release drivers since the "frequent" Nvidia drivers are essentially the beta drivers AMD release regularly. Before you start talking about stability, that's also a mute point. Just ask around and you'll see.

I wasn't talking about freesync vs g-sync although they were slow on that too.

Look up nvidia adaptive vsync. The amd equivalent just came out earlier this month. (Although conveniently you can set the frame cap to any value which is cool because adaptive v-sync only caps at monitor fps)
